Same principle as the 1989 thread. :) This year wasn't nearly as stacked and I found the choice much easier, The Phantom Menace is a bit like the MOTU movie in that it will always have a nostalgic place in my heart, but my #1 is a film that while heavily influenced by John Woo and Ghost in the Shell, blazed a trail that influened sci fi and action cinema for the two decades that followed.......

Sorry HR, revisionist question before we kick off 1999, how are you compiling 1989's 'winner' as such, given it wasn't a poll situation, or is it just an open debate on the years themselves and no 'real' winner, just a year review type scenario ?

The latter, it was just about seeing peoples opinions and hopefully getting some discussion going on the movies from that year as there were so many good ones, and I think the thread went quite well in that regard, kinda similar to the poll threads on the blockbuster of each decade, even though that was slightly different in structure I felt the best part was the discussions on the movies that the threads brought about. I enjoy talking current movies but I also like threads that give us older posters a chance to reminisce about movies from eras gone by that transport us back in time so to speak.

Absolutely, they're awesome threads dude, very much enjoy them and the set up of you doing them. the poll ones were equally as great in terms of debate setting and fun involvement. As far as 1999 goes, my personal films of the year would be off the bat, Fight Club, The Limey, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix and simply for the anticipation, SW:TPM.

I'm glad you dig them man, I always know you'll contribute plenty to them, and when I pick the ideas for them I just hope they'll be a launching point. The Sixth Sense is one I can see being picked by a few people, it introduced the world to an interesting new director and was one of the best first watch films I'ver ever seen, I was glad I saw it without knowing the twist.

My favourite movie from this year is The Green Mile. One of the best Stephen King-adaptations.

I don't know how faithful it is as an adaption as I've not read King's books, but of the films made from them I agree it's one of the best.

Very difficult one to decide on HR I will have to give a top 3.

1. The Mummy
It's very difficult to pick a favorite but this would probably have to take it, to me its one of those all time classic movies I can put on any time with anybody whether it be my Grandma or my pre-teen cousins and everyone loves it.

2. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Screw everyone who says the prequels suck this gave us Darth Maul for crying out loud lol. For all the flack it gets I loved this movie as a kid and still have a real fondness for it now.

3. Austin Powers 2
I would like to know how many times I have watched this movie lol. Not only was it funny it was everything the first movie was but just more.

And I have to give dishonorable shout outs to Wild Wild West & Galaxy Quest as they are in the category of so bad that they are good:funny:

Been a while since I watched the movie and it's around twenty years since I read the novel. But I don't think there were any major changes in the movie. Certainly nothing on level with Kubrick's The Shining or this new Pet Sematary-remake. The novel was originally released as a serial novel in six parts, so minor changes was probably made in the structure of the story. I think every part began in present time while the movie only had the beginning and end in present time. But I might remember wrong

I love The Mummy, it's a pure action adventure movie, just unadulterated fun, one of the most entertainging blockbusters ever IMO.

Gotcha, I wasn't sure as I know the adaptions of King's work have varied greatly in terms of faithfullness to the source material and in regards to how fans of his books view them because of this, and I know some are extended from short stories, like one of my favourite adaptions of his work; 'The Night Flier,' which I first saw late night on TV.

Hard to believe this year is the 20th anniversary for films like Phantom Menace and The Mummy and Disney's Tarzan.

how time flies.........
