Not even two days ago, I was thinking to myself, "What ever happenned to that new adaptation of 1984?" I had heard rumors of it a few years back but then nothing for a while. Not that we really need a new adaptation, the version with John Hurt is awesome, not to mention some parts were actually filmed on the dates they portray! But it the right hands it could be interesting none the less. But then I realized, this Hollywood! They would completely mess it up. Knowing them they would set it in 2084 or something, and then I had a nice chuckle to myself.

But then this morning I find this on slashfilm.

Exactly what I thought of as a joke, Hollywood has decided to pitch. Basically its like 1984, except our lives along with being survelanced, are controlled by robots.

And not only are they honestly going to go with that for a movie, they are also going to crank out some "young adult" books to go along with it.

I'm all for some new Orwellian fiction, his influence has been felt and apreciated elsewhere, but just the angle they are going at it is just ridiculous. And the title is just so on the nose. You just know that someone aproached the studio execs with " Its like 1984, but in the future!"

I am almost offended by the stupidity of it.

P.S. That Shepard Fairey 1984 cover is awesome.

silly as it may seem, with the world of technology going where it's starting to go with Robotics and AI, it might not be too far off base. I'm sure someone like Orwell wouldnt think it too far of a stretch at this point.

Then again, I'd be 109 in 2084, and hopefully long dead, or at least with my conscience uploaded to a computer server somewhere kicking ass in a digital world so you guys better be good to your new robot overlords ;)

I wonder, if like they’re doing this now because when they first came out with the idea they were frightened of Sanders becoming President haha. But it’s a great book so hopefully they don’t think like that
