4 US Marines killed by lone gunman/potential domestic terrorist

I just do not understand why anyone would want to associate with the Islamic State.

I do hope his family gets investigated.

The founding fathers were traitors, and would have been hanged as such had they not won (they knew that, as you can see in their writings). However, from a moral and to a lesser extent legal standpoint, the founders did formally declare independence with a list of their grievances a year into hostilities. The Continental Army also obeyed the customs of war. Admittedly, the irregulars, not so much.

The British didn't exactly have clean hands either.

They never have.

Having met (in person, no less) with people who are sympathetic( though not enough to join them, at least on the surface) to their cause.I do get some general idea.

I really don't. I know many Muslims. I have studied Islam, and its history. Even the Mongol armies who sacked Baghdad would raise an eyebrow at what the Islamic State does.

It's like they have a market focus group thinking up ways to offend rational people's sensibilities.

As far as I am concerned anyone who associates with them should be removed from this Earth.

Considering what medieval warfare is like,I highly doubt that.

In fact, ISIS behaves more like a medieval army than a 21st century armed force.

"We need to start tracking and profiling white people! Profiling saves lives!"

I like my dad's saying better. It's not the whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, arabs, indians. It's the ASS HOLES! They come in every color, gender and species!

What a horrible situation. I wish they had killed the guy before he could have killed anyone. I know it will ruffle some feathers but I thought Spider-Aziz post was good. We kill each other enough in America we really should stop meddling in other countries affairs and bringing even more death here.

I just can't believe military personnel aren't allowed to have guns on them, especially now because they are a target for terrorist attacks. This is definitely a rule that needs to be overturned.

Looks as if the shooter tried to work at a nuclear power plant back in 2013 but failed a drug test and didn't get the job.

Also, the family is saying he's been dealing with depression the past few years. Friends are saying he was distant and more solitary after he came back from the Middle East last year.

Oh, it's the classic mental instability cause.

Actually, I am going through this with a friend right now. She was kicked in the head by a horse, and since then, while refusing treatment, has gone off the deep end. She's convinced that everyone she meets is a spy for the government or the devil and we are all here to bring her down. She went nuts and took all of her furniture and burned it, saying the government stuck spy equipment all over it. Her mother and I fear she is a ticking time bomb, and begged the doctors to do something, put her on treatment or have the authorities arrest her and force her for treatment on her brain injury, but they say their hands are tied until she physically harms herself or others, which hasn't happened yet. So, while I am not buying this nut job had some mental disorder, I can see why people are claiming that ignoring the mental health crisis going on this country is never going to be the answer.

Because the mentally ill deserve rights. You can't have the cops kidnap any person who acts strange and have them institutionalized. They have to be a danger to themselves or others.

Out of hundreds of millions of people do a few people go on gun rampages each year? Yes, but that is a price of living in a free country where people can be somewhat weird and unconventional.

But she has a physical injury to her head, which to me, her neglecting that injury and refusing treatment, is she not putting her life at risk? What if she goes driving and the head injury makes her black out and she drives right into a crowd of people?

I live about 5 miles from where the gunman was killed. Yeah, our little city is on edge as you can imagine.
....
Anyways, we are living in a time where it's getting to the point where citizens are having to look over our shoulders, because you just never know who might be a terrorist/extremist

It's funny how quickly things change. Following 9/11 I felt terrible, but I thought it was silly how so many people were paranoid about terrorism happening around them. You'd have people staying home, glued to the TV looking at the terror alert colors. People out in the middle of nowhere thinking someone might bomb their local gas station.

Now just a bit later, and people with those kinds of concerns are actually justified now. Shootings, and terrorist incidents are happening in small towns. Personally I think a lot of it has to do with the recruitment on social media sites. Instead of a guy from out of the country flying in, a group like ISIS can prey on someone disillusioned with their life here in the states, and con them into suicide attacking. Then of course there are those wanting their 15 mins of fame as well.

This isn't as big of a story, so not going to make a thread on it, but something happened here locally as well. It's still being investigated, but last night in Evansville Indiana there was a shooting, and several boxes left at various locations, with the belief that the events are linked. A McDonalds, a pre-school (I believe), and a few other places had weird boxes left in front of them. The police think the boxes have pipe bombs in them.

I mention it because it drives home your point, which I would not have agreed with years ago. That these kinds of incidents really are happening in smaller, or not at famous areas in general. I'm still not going to get paranoid or anything, but when incidents like these happen locally, it does make you more conscience of it. However I've always held the opinion that it's better to live your life, rather than huddle in a corner in safety in fear of being attacked. Not that I'm saying you're saying that.

I agree that mentally ill people should be treated, and handled differently. I remember a friend's brother suddenly having a chemical imbalance, he was a teen at the time. He stripped, and went outside naked following a dog. I won't get into the whole story, but apparently the police tackled him, and slammed him against their car. I understood that he was probably freaking out, but a naked, skinny teen being roughed up by cops did upset me as I doubt he was too much of a threat.

That being said, I think insanity plea gets used faaarrr too much these days, and get people off the hook that don't deserve it. Many of these incidents are found to have months, if not years worth of planning by these individuals. As well as one individual taking out many competent individuals (some trained). To me temporary insanity is coming home to find your spouse in the middle of cheating on you, and hurting them by throwing something at them in the heat of the moment or something.

Cases where a person commits pre meditated murder after years of planning isn't the same, and shouldn't be a get out of jail free card. I'm not saying all of this about this case in geraneral. However if you're capable of plotting entrance, and exit strategies. Capable of purchasing weapons and ammo. Staking out which security member goes where, when. I'd like to think you're sane enough to take responsibility for your crimes, even if the crimes themselves are completely horrible and out there (like public shootings)

I'm just saying police shouldn't just go around throwing weird people into mental wards. People should be allowed to be weird unless they break a law or prove to be a danger to themselves or to others.

In Canada, we've already got two such isolated incidents of terrorist gunman attacks against unarmed military personnel. My office is right next to a recruitment office as well, in a large city, and I walk by there several times a day and always see military personnel distinctly in uniform. I have made a promise to myself that if anything like this ever happens right in front of my eyes, I will put myself in harm's way.

Jesus H. Christ, I might have been right about this. Yesterday, the exact same place I was talking about:

More information expected today after stabbing at Canadian Forces centre

Yeah, but everything I've heard about that specific incident so far has made it seem less like a organized terrorist attack, and more so a man with mental illness who happens to be Muslim. Especially since he claims "God told me too." which is almost cartoonish in how stereotypical it is of a violent schizophrenic.

You could probably put it on the same level as Martin Couture-Rouleau and Michel Zehaf-Bibeau though.
