What the hell is 4DX? Great question! CJ 4DPLEX’s 4DX technology "enhances" the onscreen visuals of films, enabling an immersive experience through special effects that include motion-activated seats, wind, fog, rain, lightning, vibration, snow and scents. It's the D-Box and Smell-o-vision on steroids. And it's coming . . . for you! That is, if you live in the New York area. While a 4DX theater has already opened in LA, California and Gurnee, IL, NY will be home to two 4DX theaters this year. First up is the Regal Union Square Stadium 14 on March 25th, followed by the Regal E-Walk 13 on April 28th. The first feature for the former? BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE.

How's that for some realistic immersion...

I saw a headline earlier about this, but my eyes immediately glossed over and I wound up not reading about it. That's how ambivalent to movies theaters now.

Union Square's theaters are pretty small compared to those at 42nd/34th street, hence why I stopped going there a few years ago. Can't see this working out at that location.

Cant wait for the IMAX gimmick to wear off...

^ I've never seen IMAX either. I'm behind the times, man.

4DX has been around for a couple years now. At least it has been in other territories around the world.

If it enhances the movie "experience" and can entice more people to go the movies, i don't see the harm.

What i would love is if existing and new cinemas (some are doing that) had more leg and arm room. When the place is full or near full it can be quite uncomfortable to sit in a certain position for 2 hours.:(

Yeah lets get rid of the highest resolution film format in existence. :o

I wouldnt call IMAX a gimmick. The way its sold to the populace is gimmicky, but IMAX itself is actually beneficial to the preservation and futureproofing of films. Film IMAX is an 8K format which pretty much ensures a film is future proofed regardless of the resolution of home video. 35mm and most digital cameras are around 2k - 4k and most film's DI and cgi is finished at 2k which means a lot of modern films arent even up to the standard of home video now that 4k UHD is on the market.

And now that Arri is coming out with the Arri65 digital IMAX camera the format isnt going anywhere. Infinity War is shooting entirely with the Arri65s. IMAX is likely to grow in popularity now that entire films can be shot in IMAX format with a relatively cheap manageable digital IMAX camera.

I saw dark knight and dark knight rises in imax and I just wasnt impressed. Im tored of gimmicks in movie theaters especially since 3D. I cant tell you how many times Ive gone to a theater and seen so few 2D showings. Imjust wanna go to a theater and watch the movie and leave, no cheap tricks trying to get extra money.

The first IMAX-theater in Sweden opened in November and I when I saw the ticket-prices for Star Wars it was quite shocking. Buying a brand new Blu-ray disc is cheaper. I suppose they have to come up with new technology all the time to make money when they struggling to fill the seats. It's been a long time since I saw a movie in a theater. Just doesn't feel it's worth the price or the time to get there (I'm living quite far away from nearest movie theater)

Oh come on, you guys have never been to that Mickey theater in Magic Kingdom or watched "Days of Thunder" scenes in 4D? Lots of fun and a different experience. If a movie Im down for is playing the next time Im up in NY, ill check it out. Not a huge fan ofthe moving seats but those little puffs of air or spritz of water is a lot of fun.

I love 4DX.

Anyways, looks like 4DX theaters aren't sticking to Sony's plans - which involved moving 'Aquaman' out this week to feature 'Escape Room' instead which is freaking awesome! Since that means I'll be able to see it in 4DX. Been worrying about that.

Wonder what other movies 4DX may refuse to play ball with Sony with.

Sony Pictures Signs Deal to Release 13 Films in 4DX Format in 2019

The most surprising one was 4DX agreeing to show 'Intruder' on April 26th (when they could make A LOT more with Avengers: Endgame - hoping they opt for Avengers like they opted to stick by Aquaman this week and June 21st opting Toy Story instead of The Grudge).
