Yes, the latest assault on America's waistline comes in the form of Friendly's recently launched Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt. Move over, Double Down, there's a new "something with far more calories than bread as a bun" sandwich in town.

Friendly's gastronomical innovation is not without precedent. The Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt appears to be inspired by similar "Fatty Melts" and "Chubby Melts" that have been served in the South for a few years now (source), as well as the Midwest.

What's the nutritional content of the culinary monstrosity? According to the Friendly's site (PDF):

1500 Calories
870 Fat Calories
79g Total Fat
38g Saturated Fat
180g Cholesterol
2090mg Sodium
101g Carbs
9g Dietary Fiber
4g Sugar
54g Protein

Deana, who sent it in, says, "BRB, dry heaving."
Consumerist's Laura says, "I love grilled cheeses. This is terrifying."

in before American's are fat

Looks like a regular burger/sandwich, with two extra slices of bread to me (save the added flash of making it a grilled cheese).

The sodium count is staggering.

As good as that looks, I don't think I could bring myself to eat it. Same for the 'double down'.

My god, are restaurant chains just trying to outdo each other in who can stop their customer's hearts faster?

The answer is yes. Next time I go to Friendly's with my friend I'm ordering this, so I'll be dead and won't be coming home.

Why bother going there when you can make one of those yourself at home ?

I think I saw that dude from Man vs Food eat something like that last year

We made that famous in Atlanta. It's called the Double Bypass and it's available at The Vortex.

I never heard of Friendly's, so I don't think we have those around here. It's a shame too because I'd eat the **** out of that ****.

:wishes he knew where a Friendly's was:

sodium for days!

What surprises me-- what truly and utterly shocks me about that cheeseburger...

...there's no bacon. You've already gone as far as attaching two sandwiches to it. Why not go the whole 9 yards and just slap a couple strips on bacon in there? It's gonna kill you either way, so it might as well taste better.

I'm surprised that there's no cheese actually on the burger.

That goes along the same line as this....

Dear lord my arteries are clogging just looking at this stuff....

If I ever bought a Double Down, I'd be eating that mess as two different meals.

The above Cheese BurgerMelt, I'd eat as 3. 2, if I decided to eat both grilled cheese sandwiches at the same time.
