I saw a billboard on the side of a bus for The Spirit today. It was the Eva Mendes quote poster.

Sadly, that poster will make more people think that it's Mendes playing The Spirit. I hope they plan on marketing the actual character, rather than just his female supporting cast or huge words describing a city...

The Eva Mendes quote isn't Eisner. Its not his style, Its Miller's style and thats what I'm afraid of. The whole thing that "made" the Spirit was Eisner's technique and I think Miller is turning it more into a sort of Sin City feel. I think he's trying to advertise the movie by having attractive women say suggestive lines and using that technique to draw in the public, but this isn't what the Spirit is about. I agree they should start marketing the Spirit rather than the women. As for "huge words describing a city...", I can understand. Eisner often spelled out the Spirit in clever ways on his covers:

But I understand your concern. First they should introduce who the Spirit is before they focus on the co-stars. I just hope this isn't too Miller and Not enough Eisner. :csad:

Actually, having attractive women say suggestive lines and using that technique to draw in the public is indeed a part of Eisner's Spirit.

They did introduce the Spirit himself first before they introduced the co-stars. The first trailer focused on nothing but the Spirit himself.

Obviously Frank Miller has made changes to modernize and accommodate the film medium. The Frank Miller film is very indicative of the original Will Eisner comics. The femme fatales. The romance. The Noir. The action/adventure. The humor. The fantasy. It's all there. The story of the movie is built outward from Will Eisner's original Sand Saref story, not just something Miller's created.

I just hope its not R. The Spirit is not meant to be rated-R. Theres really no need for it, if they are truly sticking close to the comics. Also, I have a big problem with The Octopus. I mean, he's not depicted any ways near the way he is in the comic. And of all people to choose, Samuel L. Jackson!? He's been in every movie since the 70s. And the Octopus in the comics is white and you can't see his face. Not seeing his face is one of his trademarks. What the heck Miller?!

I have been reading the old news paper comics Eisner did recently, and think he was ahead of his time.I hope the movie turns out well.

The Shadow, Sam Jackson is probably his disguise.

My local theater has a great Spirit 3-d stand up poster. There are alot of buildings with the Spirit crouching on top of one.
