Well, this is an idea I've been tossing around for a while its sort of a cross between Sky Captain and Star Trek.
The main story follows the exploits of the Tesla Class Aether Ship Declearation, launched in 1916 it travels through space on a mission of policing the so called "Universal Powder Keg".
When man first discovered space travel the British were the first to use it and the Germans followed, the British found alot of habbitable planets so they began putting together an Empire, except there are alot of Zealots on these planets and they start doing little terrrorist attacks and such so the US, deciding to keep there products and goods going to the space colonies assemble an Elite crew: Captain Alexander Van Degraaft, Navigatior Thomas Dobbs, Recon and tactile officer David McVerth, Science officer and life support specialist Alexis Avery, and Engineer Mary Sawyer. The Crew while policing the sector come in contact with new Alien lifeforms and face the problems people would face on a Universal voyage.
Some supporting Characters would be the exiled Avia Nodov also known as "Dov", a hologram like being who was exiled from his home planet for defying the order, Far que De Alqu or "The Traveler" an Alien from the Andromeda Galaxy who travels with Dov in a time-space machine.
Some Villians would not only be the Oortal Alliance (radicals of the British Space Empire) but also just little one off villians and to even out the radicals we have the Devincians Clockwork Robots of Di Vinci design who were lost in space thousands of years ago.
The technology would follow the design of steampunk and make use of old world physics so space is like a liquid and the ship is powered by a huge turbine engine. You may go faster than light, and computers are all tesla jars and mechinical punchcards. Weapons are Electrical pulse, and the ships protection is polarized hull plating with a layer of Mercury to liquid rubber at a ratio of 1- 1/2, Gravity cannot be manipulated so stablizing people is done via monthly iron injects and magnetic floors.
