I have the Amazing Spider-Man DVD collection and was wondering, what should I read? I'll probably jump straight into 2000 but what else? It has pretty much all the issues. Does anyone have just some good years or issues that they really liked that they think I should read?

And if you wondering if it works well... I think it does. Of course you will benefit more from having a big screen than a smaller one, I think about 17 is good enough. It isn't the optimal way of reading a comic, as on my macbook pro Adobe runs a little slowly, and the "preview" app has the watermark, which isn't bad but certainly not needed. I was on a trip and it was a great way to read some comics in color. Plus, I'm not a big spidey-fan.

Heh...Spidey fans will tell you to read them all :D

You gotta read the Stan Lee stories,a s hokey and cheesy as they are, they are awesome!

I would also recommend the Hobgoblin storline, I think it's in the 200s somewhere. Definitely read any Goblin/Spidey tale, especially the Death of Gwen. The Venom stories drawn by McFarlane.

Have fun being immersed in Spidey lore :D

Thanks a lot! I'll make a note of the issues. I think this was a great way for me to get some Spidey action it because it does make it cheaper for me to read than an omnibus or even just buyig the back issues (probably very hard). But it is actually quite intimidating to see a few hundred issues just waiting to be read (in folders but still...).

It's funny though, it has all the ads so I read an advert in an old issue for Ultimate Spiderman 1. I wonder what people thought of that back in the early 90s? It would never work right?!

Basically read all the issues.
Also the Stan Lee issues are not cheesy.

If you don't want to read everything, then just read the first 150 issues instead.

Heh...yea, there were a lot of doubters way back when Ultimate Spidey was first announced. I admit, I was one of the ones that was scratching my head as Chapter One still left a bad taste in my mouth :o

I think to call yourself a true Spidey fan you have to read Stan's run, so yeah... start at the beginning! :yay: The dated language and style takes some getting used to, but it's totally facinating. Like a window into history and the birth of the character.

I'd definitely start with the Stan Lee issues as well, and certainly work your way through Gerry Conway's run. That covers Amazing Fantasy #15 to Amazing Spider-Man #150, which is the equivalent of the first eight volumes of Essential Spider-Man right there, and it makes for a pretty good epic. I'd also give Roger Stern's run--which is roughly 1982 to 1984--a try, as there are several great and noteworthy stories like "Nothing Stops the Juggernaut," the first and best, Hobgoblin arc, and the "Kid Who Collected Spider-Man." Just for fun, I'd also read some of the letters pages of those issues. You'd be surprised at some of the concerns raised by Spidey fans back in the day and how they compare the opinions of today's readers.

read them all for your Spidey knowledge and so you don't ask us STUPID QUESTIONS, mmm hmm! Marilyn Manson(SHH poster)!......

:cmad: no offense but that poster gets always on my last nerves......

must COOL down......

does this DVD collect all Spider-Man titles (amazing, web, peter parker, etc) or just Amazing SM?

Oh! Read the McFarlane Venoms, "Kraven's Last Hunt" (I can't remember if that was all told in ASM or not), The Master-Planner arc, the Night Gwen Stacey died, and ASM 400!

^

I have them too and it just collects Amazing. That made it difficult to read whole story arcs when they start jumping across titles... so you can't read all of stories like Kraven's Last Humt or Mad Dog Ward.

I used to frequent Donald Thomas' website to download issues from other titles so I could complete story arcs. It can get tedious trying to piece it all together....

Yea, I heard that was one of the problems with the DVD compilation...it's just ASM issues, and when stories start to crossover it gets tough to follow. It'll get messy when or if you read the 90's clone saga

I didn't even know you could purcahse all of the issues on DVD. I'm definitely going to look into this. Anyone here read all Amazing Spider-Man issues in existence?

Read ASM #186 to 200...

Without a doubt, the BEST run on Amazing Spider-Man excluding Stan Lee...

:word: :word: :word:

Aloha,
If you haven't visited The Library in a while, let me formally invite you. New material, all within the 616 Universe.

I like #176 through #202 quite a bit.

I say start at Amazing Fantasy #15 and continue on until you read all the Issues. Reading all the Issues will help you get to know more of the Spidey comics.

You should start from the begining and stop at the end... (or around the mid to late 1990s)

I completley disagree, they defenitley are not stale. They are fantastic, classic, and very enjoyable Issue's.
They're wonderfully plotted. And featured fantastic characters that have been masterfully created.

That said, the actual writing; dialogue, characterization, pacing, etc. is subpar. Not just to modern comics (as - I know - 60s comics were just written differently), but even the comics of ASM's time.

I've read old Batman issues that were, sure, campy, and more than a bit silly, but still a great ride that you can breeze through. You can't breeze through an early issue of ASM. They're overly wordy pieces with a lot of pointless and downright illogical exposition.

Now I'm talking about the very early issues there. I will agree, Lee's writing did improve dramatically towards the end of his run. ASM #50+ is some of the best stuff I've ever read.

Seeing as I own Amazing Spider-Man #1 to current, I guess I've read them all...
