Look, as a lifelong Godzilla and Kaiju fan in general, I like most Kaiju fans were disappointed, horrified, and pissed off about the American Godzilla. It was a disaster. But lets not get into that.
With the success of Cloverfield, I see an opening for another monster movie or two possibly finding success. And look, Japan has created the greatest monsters. One of my favorite being Rodan.
For those unfamiliar:

Rodan is a simple enough concept that it won't take a rocket scientist of a writer to craft a great monster movie script. The monster itself easily can be adpated to an American origin, and instead of doing yet another "monster attacks New York" movie, I think that Rodan presents an opportunity for something different.
I myself would have Rodan immerge from the Appalachian Mountains and attack areas like Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It would be cool to see the smaller towns in those states attacked by monsters, and even then you could stage a big showdown in Pittsburgh near the three rivers. And the rugged terrain of those areas would provide cool scenes for militarial battles with Rodan, or two Rodan's. And as a sub plot, the government could have a moral debate about risking the lives of Americans in those areas with dangerous military attacks on Rodan so that the lives of others in states like New York and LA could be saved. All in all, this would not even cost much. I think it's a good idea and if done right would be an awesome monster movie.
