http://www.rawstory.com/2015/06/sor...igns-bill-limiting-school-vaccine-exemptions/

Despite heavy public opposition Gov. Brown signed legislation removing religious or personal belief based reasoms to exempt a child from getting vaccinated for school.

Last December an outbreak of Measles at Disneyland led to more than 100 cases in many states. Srvrtal other communicable diseases have shown indications of breaking out.

Previously Measles appeared to have been eliminated within the US.

I have to admit that this is one of the few issues that actually drives me into rage. After my transplant, I got to know a lot of kids with various kinds of cancer who depended on herd immunity. The stupidity and arrogance of anti-vaxxers is totally mind boggling. When other countries are desperate for vaccines, we have idiots who think measles is no big deal. It drives me crazy.

And **** Jim Carrey.

They had to. This was becoming a serious health risk.

I still don't understand the anti-vaxxers mindset. Boiled down to the very basics alone, the science makes sense and is easily verifiable while their own methods are faulty and shown to be useless in most cases.

or to shorten it - ****ing morons.

Awesome. Glad they did this. Stupidity when it comes to health risks just shouldn't be allowed.

One thing I hate on the pro vaxxers side is when they talk about problems that might occur when taking vaccines they talk in absolutes that nothing bad happens. While that is generally true if you look on the instructions for many vaccines they have ill effects of taking the vaccine reports and you can usually find anywhere from 50-500 bad reactions to taking the vaccine per like a million doses. Now most of those are minor things like having a sezure or getting the flu(ie bad effect that person fully recovers soon after) but you can usually find 1 or 2 really bad things such as death. I just wish the pro vaccine side would talk about the 1 in a million problems that may occur and discuss why that is the risk we have to take to prevent other bad things from happening.

I think this hiding the 100% truth only increases the anti vaxxers suspicion about the drug companies trying to hide something and makes for more problems trying to have an honest discussion why vaccines are important. The second you can point to the one in a million example that proves something wrong it basically ruins the credibility of everything else the person says

Is there actually anyone claiming vaccines are 100% safe and effective though? I've only ever seen anti-vaxers make claims with absolutes.

Whenever I see people who support vaccines talk about potential dangers of vaccines, I never see them mention the 1 in a million chances of bad things happening. It's always "science says it's safe". As I said i think somebody's argument about the benefits of vaccines gets more credibility if they totally upfront and don't leave out the extremely unlikely chance that there could be problems, because the counter argument is "well it did happen to this one person"

I never seen anybody say it's 100% safe, but they usually use wording that makes it seem that way

It's not hidden at all. It's mentioned fairly frequently that some people may have a bad reaction to the shots, doctors will ask you if your family has any history of adverse reactions and it's even made fun of in fiction. Like in one book from Anita Blake on guy got turned into a werewolf by getting a bad batch of lycanthrope serum. It's not mentioned as much as some would like because it happens incredibly infrequently.

Just checked what "anti-vaxxers" are and translated it into my native language...
... Really? That's a thing in America?

I hate the anti-vaxxers with a boiling passion. Their stupidity literally gets people killed

It's now a thing world wide. Countries are basically outlawing these morons from getting people killed.

What makes it so interesting that it's not the usual conservative anti-science crowd. Most old people (who are predominately conservative) remember the real, immediate positive impact of vaccines.

It's the West Coast liberals.

Frankly, I feel that Western life is so tranquil in comparison to that of the Third World that ignorant people in our society make things up to create problems. It's why we're seeing such a backlash against vaccines and GMOs.

Well, I don't think GMO's are the devil as some liberals do. But people have a right to know what's in their food.

It still doesn't change the fact I never see the pro vaccine side point out the 1 in a million chance of very bad things happening when discussing this issue. In fairness the anti vaxxer side doesn't either so they equally as guilty. I do think any discussion from the pro vaccine side though should bring up the chances of bad things happening then just ignore the extremely low chance something bad might happen if you take a vaccine. If they address it and point out worse things can happen if you don't take it, I think it gives their argument more credibility. The fact it's ignored seems like they hiding things to some people

I don't see it mentioned often but a simple search for any side effects of vaccines will show that there are some side effects that have resulted in severe pain or even death. They also show it is the upmost minority when you look at the odds against having it happen.

You have to be kidding.

BTW, maybe it was me, but I thought it was interesting to see how it went from a 'left wing' thing to the more 'right wing' thing, especially with Libertarians citing that big govnerment should butt out, etc.

It's an idiot thing. I agree it's a bunch of arrogant left wing *******s who are at the forefront of this movement, and libertarians, who value absolute freedom over common sense, don't want to agree with government on anything.

Yes, there is a chance a vaccine will hurt your child, but it's the same as most anything else. "Sir/ma'am, there is a very small chance of your child reacting badly to this vaccine. There is also a small chance of your child being hit by a car when you leave this building....and being struck by lightning....and being allergic to peanuts...and tripping over the curb and getting brain damage...."
