Not the Marvel comic. The old British TV show. Steed, Gambit (again, not the Marvel character), and Purdey. Today is its 40th anniversary.

New Avengers? I remember the original Avengers - with Steed and Cathy Gale (and then Emma Peel and then Tara King).

I remember watching it and thinking to myself that the Avengers concept had really gone to s**t and that it dragged Patrick Macnee along as John Steed to give it some sense of legitimacy... the show was was the bastard of the classic Avengers... it started going downhill with Emma Peel leaving and Tara King taking her place and never stopped from going down the toilet from that point on...

The complete box set of the original series with Gale, Peel, King, etc. is available here in Australia in December. I have mine ordered. I also have the box set for the New Avengers just for historical reasons. When the series was originally announced I thought that Christmas had come again, but only until the series arrived. They took away Steed's vintage Bentley and put him in Roll Royces and modern Jaguars - not nice! I did love Purdey though.

News of a possible reboot... Given the reactions to The New Avengers sequel series and the 1998 movie, I wonder if this is the sort of property which was "of its time" — and can't really be revisited.
