Anything stating that if Sony doesn't make Spider-Man movies the rights revert?

For future reference. Wanted to know if there was some kind of specific document or article that states it.

I'm sure there is though. Not that it will ever happen though. Sony's not giving up Spider-Man unless they are going into bankruptcy.

The general consensus is there is one, but these contracts are not public records. I think they were quick to reboot because they didn't want to lose the franchise, but they'll almost certainly stay on top of their game, so I doubt it'll be an issue (especially now that they're going into spinoff territory).

Don't they own a piece of him that's there's forever unless they sell it away?

I think its *possible* the Spider-man rights will return to Marvel, but it would probably require Sony getting out of the movie production business. This isn't especially likely, but its more likely than Fox ever giving back the X-Men rights, by contrast.

What makes you say that? Spider-Man is just as important to Sony as the X-Men are to Fox.

I think there is a expiration date so to speak on the time the studios can have the character without utilizing them in a film, isn't that how Marvel got back Punisher, Blade, etc? They didn't have to buy them back.

But yeah Sony has years of Spidey movies in the works, he isn't going anywhere soon.

Its not that Spider-man is less important to Sony, its that *movie production* is less important to Sony. They've considered getting out of the business before. And if they leave the movie-making business, the rights head back to Marvel.

Whereas Fox isn't going to stop making movies, which means they won't stop making X-Men movies.

I have to think that if they start making these movies at a loss they'll be forced to give them back. At some point people are not going to keep going to X-Men movies every two or three years.

They are paying for the rights to make Spider-man movies, but they do not straight up outright own anything re:Spider-man.

Ah right, Sony's film production is just one part of their whole entire company. I didn't know Sony had considered that though, that'd be something. Maybe Spidey can come home after all. I for one would welcome his addition to the MCU.

They would probably reduce the special effects and/or focus on the more ground level characters like Wolverine, and Beast

If the main X-Men franchise starts failing come on, there is no hope for spin offs of those smaller characters. Even Wolverine's movies only do around 350-400m.

I heard they own rather than lease part of the character.

I think the rights can revert back but that Sony would still retain a percentage of gross or something like that.

I never heard about them or anyone else straight up owning the movie rights. I have always read they have "x" amount of time to have a film going or rights reversion and it's in perpetuity. So it's essentially as long as they want, but if they let it lapse it's done.

I remember reading Sony gets like 100% of the ticket sales (but Marvel gets all the Merchandising)...
