Apparently, Sony is not so dependant on third part support.

God of War, Gran Turismo series, Naughty Dog games (Jak & Daxter), Insomniac titles (also includes Resistance), SOCOM and a couple more are all published by Sony.

But really, Sony is only deluding themselves. The crown jewels of their lineup are all third party titles (Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Devil May Cry 4) and on the contrary, almost all of the 360's heavyweights like Gear of War, Alan Wake, Halo 3 Fable, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, PGR series, Halo Wars and Rare-developed games are all published by Microsoft Gaming Studios.

Sony's comments make absolutely no sense at all.

One of the main reasons why Sony's been successful is because their 3rd party support.

Well, they were saying that those Microsoft games aren't huge hits in all three territories, which is true since nobody plays 360 in Japan. While the comment did make sense, it was pretty pointless to say. Yes Sony does have first party games, but like you said most of their major sellers are third party titles.

Make sense? Yes. Smart? NO.

I think it's a stretch to say nobody in Japan plays the 360.

Some people are just plain ignorant, and/or stupid.

Of course there are some people, but there are very few. If Microsoft ever needed to make a serious profit in japan to thrive as a company, they would be screwed.

That was EXACTLY what I was talking about. When I said Sony's "comments", I was only referring to their brainfart about Microsoft being more dependent on third party software than themselves and not their collective comments in that article.

I think it's a stretch to say just because Japan doesn't play the 360 all that much means that the Microsoft-published games aren't very popular in all areas - Japan isn't that big of a market. And I know that you may not have meant this but it seemed like you implied it.

Speaking of which, you could just have been playing the devil's advocate in this sense too.

Anyway, Sony kind of slapped their third party support - they're very dependent on it, if they didn't have any then they wouldn't be first - they'd be last.

Sony probably has the weakest first party lineups overall in terms of units sold etc. They're really working to change that with the PS3 though, but the point stands they have a lot of well selling series, but they don't have one big 'capture everybody' title or anything. Microsoft has Halo and Nintendo has all of its characters.

What did that have to do with the fact that Sony just took a rather large, watery **** on top of it's 3rd party developers?

Sony doesn't have the amount of first party titles that other consoles have. They need third party support more than anyone. What a silly comment.

The only reason they're so successful is 3rd party support. The PS1 wouldn't have been nearly as popular and probably failed if they didn't have an exclusive on Doom, MK3 and Final Fantasy 7 in the early days of the system.

Sony will always have the edge with Japanese devs, since it could be years before the 360 breaks the 1 million unit mark in Japan. PS3 will hit that mark as soon as Sony can make enough.
