As good as Bill Pope's cinematography for 2 and 3 is...

...does anyone else kinda miss Dan Burgess's look for the first film? I was watching some of it last night, and there was a nice comic booky look to it--the big establishing shot of Oscorp before Norman transforms looks like a freakin' matte painting! It's awesome!

Both approaches are very good, but I can't help but feel a little disappointment when I look back that that facet of visual continuity wasn't maintained.

Really, I thought the cinematography stayed consistent through all three films, even if it was a different guy for 2 and 3.

I think what I miss about Spider-Man 1's is the night time city shots. Like after Peter found out he was responsible for Ben's death, and he went on top of the Chrysler. Badass.

^Same here. It gave me thought that it would be cool to be Spider-Man - being able to climb buildings and watch the city lights below. Seems relaxing.

That's one thing I like about the video games. ^

I don't know who's responsible for the lighting in the posters (the orange and yellow), but that is freaking brilliant. I love the posters for these movies.

This is an interesting topic. I recently picked up on the same thing. To me the cinematography is arguably better in Spider-man 2 and 3, but I do love how Spider-man 1 had more of a look and feel of a comic book.

definetly like how all 3 films look and hope they dont' change that to quick juttery editing in the next film. 1-3 had some really great establishing shots. i like when films have the room to breathe properly. the only thing i would have to say i prefer about 1 over 2 and 3 is how close the camera sometimes gets to the actors, where it seems like its so close to their faces where you cant see their mouths (ock in 2 with the accident scene) or you can't get an idea of their body language, which is sometimes more important to see than just their faces.

Well, I'm not talking about shots or editing, but just the way the picture looks.

Yeah. 2 and 3 are definitely more polished, and they certainly look great in their own right and have a nice vibe (one shot that sticks out to me from 2 is Spidey going through the truck to go after the robbers), part of me does miss the look of the first film.

no, i kno what your saying about the way the picture looks, and 1 looks more comic-booky than the other 2.
