is it true if you give a dog chocolate it can kill the dog?

Nothing new here, but then again, the top ten poisons aren't as subject to change year to year as the top ten movies.

WebMD actually has some good information on this, though I was looking for a more reputable website.

Primarily it comes down to the fact that chocolate is toxic, it's just that humans are able to process it better than certain species, dogs included. It really depends on the weight of the dog, the amount of chocolate and the type of chocolate.

KSPCA (Krypton Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has released their Top Ten Pet Poisons of 2009:

10. red kryptonite
9. gold kryptonite
8. silver kryptonite
7. liquid kryptonite
6. gaseous kryptonite
5. kryptonite laser beams
4. solid kryptonite
3. semi-solid kryptonite
2. kryptonite laced anti-freeze
1. Bizarro after drinking and becoming frisky

Oh ****. :o

I didn't know about the raisins, I let my dog eat some that fell on the floor the other day too. :(

My dog once ate an entire plate of chocolate cookies. Her heart was beating so fast that night. It was scary.

My mom gave my dog grapes a few times before she knew. He's perfectly fine. Depends on the weight and how many they ate in a given time.

Mine is a tiny wiener dog, but I think he's one of those Iron Stomach dogs. My God, the things I'll catch him attempting to eat.

Pretty much. I've known people to give their dogs cauliflower regularly and the dogs were fine. Of course they stopped after they knew that it was bad for them (plus it's gassy, and dogs farts are bad).

The things I've seen some dogs eat make me believe that some dogs do have those Iron Stomachs. I once saw an x-ray with the crisp outline of a plastic army man in his small intestine. It was the guy standing with the rifle too, so I was surprised that it didn't pierce the intestinal lining.

my aunts dog eats chocolate all the time and she is fine.

What type of dog? How old is the dog? What type of chocolate? How much chocolate?

Regardless, I'd advise her to stop letting the dog have chocolate. There's always the chance that even if the theobromine doesn't poison the dog, that the sugar might do some sort of damage to the dog, plus there're nutritional factors to keep in mind.
