Avatar: IMAX 3D vs. Theater

I saw Revenge of the Fallen first on the regular screen and again that same week on IMAX. It was larger, but the three scenes Bay shot in IMAX were what made the difference, since the characters were literally to real world scale. The IMAX is basically to immerse you even more into the world.

how is this possible? how can they make it better?

3D theaters are using digital projectors. so shouldnt then this be as clean as possible?

I remember reading an article which said that IMAX cinemas have better picture quality than normal cinemas, like IMAX being the HD version of normal cinema screens.

Well seeing as Avatar doesn't have any scenes filmed in IMAX, would it still be a better experience than a regular 3D cinema?

Now seeing as your saw TF2 in IMAX and on a normal screen. How did the non-IMAX resolution scenes compare to the normal cinema screen and the IMAX cinema screen?

Ah, yes. Picture quality would pretty much be the same for a film in IMAX and on a Digital screen but with the huge screen size of IMAX, it could possibly make a film look even better.

In other words it is kind of watching a Blu-Ray on a 32" HDTV and then on a 50" HDTV. Having a bigger screen size improves the experience in my opinion.

I am going to see Avatar in 3D in regular theaters. I would see it in IMAX but I am not sure if the Imax in my local Air and Space Museum will be showing it. Plus I can save some cash becasue I plan to see Avatar Friday and then on Saturday!

But like someone else said Imax is more immersive (sp) I too saw Revenge of the Fallen in Imax and the forest battle was awe inspiring !!!

Well after much debate I bought my tickets at local theater who has REAL D setup.

The reason?

The IMAX theater nearest to me does not use shutter glasses they use Linear Polarizing glasses which means if you slightly turn your head the 3D effect goes away. REAL D uses circular polarizers which looks great no matter how you move your head.

The other reason is that the IMAX theater closet to me in King Of Prussia is kind of a half assed IMAX screen (it looks more like a slightly bigger misshapen movie screen and not like the huge giant dome IMAX that they have at Franklin Institute in Philly).

So yeah love to see it on a IMAX in 3D but I need to find a theater with a huge IMAX screen that does not use Linear Polarizers for 3D and is in driving distance to Delaware.

I hope this movie really uses the 3D though, I hate when I pay a crap ton of money to see 3D and only the logo at the beginning of the movie pops out of the screen and the rest of the movie it just has a little more depth than a normal 2D experience.

If they are going make a movie 3D then use the 3D!!! It does not have to be a gimmick, use it to tell the story or to immerse the audience into the movie. If they are not going to do anything with the 3D effects then don't bother at all.
