It looks like Terry Gilliam's highly-troubled and long-delayed 'DON QUIXOTE' project is looking at a light at the end of the tunnel... And not in the bad 'dead' way either.

Gilliam reteamed with Depp on a Don Quixote project revolving around a modern day advertising executive shooting a commercial in Spain and losing his mind to believe he is Sancho Panza...

I'm there.
(I just hope Gilliam doesn't have the apocalyptic troubles on his second go-round that he did the first time and then again with The Brothers Grimm...)

Wow! This is good news. I wonder who he will get to play Don Quixote himself. I doubt that Jean Rochefort will be back.

I'd suggest (with a decent make-up job) Vincent Cassel.

I was waiting for this. I'd actually heard that Depp was using some of the money from Pirates to get this film up and running again.

YES! I felt so sorry it failed the first time and it looked so good.

Can't wait.

Well, then Mr. Depp is a true hero, cause Gilliam deserves his chance to deliver another masterpiece (although I hear Tideland is pretty close).

Gilliam To Tilt At Windmills Again

Director Terry Gilliam disclosed Thursday that he plans to restart production of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote next year after securing rights from the insurance company that paid out $15 million when the movie's sets were destroyed by a flash flood in 2000 and one of the stars of the movie pulled out following a serious injury. Speaking at a tribute to him Thursday night by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in London, Gilliam, who created the graphic images for the Monty Python TV shows and movies before launching his career as a film director, said that he now believes that God stepped in to "save his ass" on Don Quixote when the storm occurred. "I was in some way relieved that it did fall apart," he said. "Because I didn't have the money to finish it. It's a good thing it went down when it did because I would have got the blame for going over budget. I think this time we will make a better film."

(and i heard Michael Palin will get to play Don Quixote, hope it's true)

Clint Eastwood for the Don and Bardem for Sancho.

Gilliam's "Quixote" Aims To Ride Again
By Garth Franklin Thursday May 14th 2009 03:12PM

Terry Gilliam hopes to finally restart his beloved but doomed "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote", around a decade after his famous failed first attempt thwarted by bad weather, destroyed sets and a lead star's injuries.

Variety reports that Gilliam and screenwriter Tony Grisoni have rewritten and updated the script which now revolves around a filmmaker who is charmed into joining Don Quixote's eternal quest for his ladylove, becoming an unwitting Sancho Panza.

Gilliam is also in talks with Johnny Depp, who had been set to star as a modern-day ad executive who travels back in time and is mistaken for Sancho Panza by Don Quixote. His availability however will be an issue.

Jeremy Thomas will produce.

Well, well, I don't know can it get more Gilliam.

(and i heard Michael Palin will get to play Don Quixote, hope it's true)

That would be awesome.

I found this old pic of Jean Rochefort as Don Quixote:

Pretty cool.

Ewan McGregor Joins Terry Gilliam's Don Quixote

Empire magazine talked to Terry Gilliam at the Cannes Film Festival last night and learned that Ewan McGregor will star in the director's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

McGregor is replacing Johnny Depp, who was going to star in the original, aborted version ten years ago.

According to previous reports, the new version will revolve around a filmmaker (McGregor) who is charmed into joining Don Quixote's (Robert Duvall) eternal quest for his ladylove, becoming an unwitting Sancho Panza.

Gilliam is planning a September start for the film, which will have a budget of about $20 million.

i really wanted Depp but McGregor needs a nit badly. I mean, as of late, he's been resurfacing from a loooong absence so the more movies the merrier.

I'm happy with Ewan, he's become a fine actor.

Competing Don Quixote Movie in the Works?

Filmmaker Terry Gilliam has been trying for decades to get his movie The Man Who Killed Don Quixote off the ground after a failed attempt starring Johnny Depp which was documented in the 2002 movie Lost in La Mancha. In the last year, things were looking good that Gilliam had found a way to get the movie going again with actors Robert Duvall and Ewan McGregor committing to the key roles, but before cameras have started rolling, rumor site Pajiba is reporting that producer Joel Silver and Warner Bros. are now developing their own Don Quixote movie, this one to be more in the swashbuckling vein of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies

As seems to have been the case with numerous competing projects over the years-- including ones about Alexander the Great and upcoming movies starring The Three Musketeers--often the first project out of the gate has the advantage and while Gilliam already has cast attached to his project, there's no denying Silver and Warner Bros. have the money and power to get their project moving forward fairly quickly.

You can read Pajiba's story here. (Thanks to Cinematical for bringing this to our attention.)

Let us know if you've been looking forward to Gilliam's long-delayed movie and whether you think it might still happen if faced with a bigger budget studio movie about Don Quixote.

Cool, i had no idea Gilliam has trying to make a Don Quixote film, I hope it gets off the ground.

Same here, and i'm a huge Ewan fan, so i think this could be wonderful for sure :woot: Terry's style is quite something, i'm curious to see how this one would go.

Go Gilliam! Cause the chances of the other one being a raging pile of suck and uninspiring, bland summer blockbuster bull**** is pretty damn high.
