Batman Forever: HBO First Look

The tone of Batman Returns lead to the studio taking the more light-hearted kid friendly approach to the two films that followed. Forever still held some darkness through-out and still felt in the same universe as the first two. The 4th film was just a cheese ball campfest.

I think the studio was willing to do anything to get Burton back since Batman did so well. They weren't prepared as to how far he would take it, and even for me, being loving the dark side, it was just to Burton for me. I actually prefer Batman Forever to BR. So I guess I should thank Burton in a way.

To be more exact, I don't think that Warner Bros. really thought much about the exact tone that Tim Burton was aiming for in Batman Returns, as long as he raked in the dough. When Returns made significantly less than the first film, Burton became the immediate fall guy for not making a more "mainstream" assable film. McDonald's was forced to pull a Happy Meal promotion when parental groups started to complain about the overly dark, violent and sexual content in Returns.

yup

Not to get off subject, but McDonalds was not forced to pull their promotion. It ran for the full cycle it was scheduled to.

Well it was overly dark, violent, and sexual. Not good when your audience ranges from children to adults. By making it so he alienated a good amount of the audience and turned them off to the film. In steps in Joel.

I understand WB wanted to go light but they went over the edge in Batman & Robin. That was too light and made Batman dead in the water until Begins in 2005. And not many people went to go see that cause of Batman & Robin.

Agreed. The movie was made to sell toys and was just plain out dumb. Batman Forever had a god balance of the dark and light elements. B&R went totally overboard and thats why it is the bane of all batman fans.

Dark, violent and sexual sounds great for a Batman movie.

What's definitely wrong is to think that children must be an important part of your audience.

Only in small doses

No, because Batman has always been an all-ages-character and only overgrown children want to change this.

Children are an important part of the 'audience of all ages'. From 4 year olds to 13 year olds, to teenagers, to young adults, to adults. Batman hits a wide variety of fans, and to say that thinking children are important is wrong, is a dumb statement. Dads take there kids to see Batman, when a new film comes out my dad wants to go see it with me, just like he took me to go see all the old ones in the theater when I was a kid.

I know i hate that. Besides children watch anything really South Park all that so it does not matter really. And besides they will grow up having sex and cursing anyways.

Plus Dark Knight was dark too and so was Batman Begins. Batman Returns was not any darker then them mvoies were. Even Batman Forever had some dark in it.

Yes but they weren't dark, violent, and as sexual as Returns. Returns is by far the most far out, over the top, adult-oriented Batman film to date, and it suffers from too much.

I can't completely disagree with you here...

I would say that there was a sense of maturity to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight whereas Batman Returns definitely went for sex innuendos and over the top violence...

But how dark it is would be a simple matter of opinion... It can only be considered dark visually and in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way.

Come on the penguins having explosives strapped on them. It was not that dark and yes you had Catwomen licking Batman in the face and Penguin rubbing on Catwomen but come on.

Batman Forever had some of that with Chase Merdian having them sex jokes and kissing Batman and being overly obessed with Batman. And her rubbing on Batman. And that had some cheesy stuff in it aswell.

And Batman Forever was the light toned flick WB strived for. So i still to this day do not understand WB feelings on Batman Returns when Forever had sex jokes aswell and both movies ahd cheesy stuff in it.

But I think your not factoring that Returns as a whole was much darker than Forever. And the "sexually" in Forever was more subtle and less in your face. Catwoman was wearing leather licking herself on a bed, and Penguin walks in and says: "Just the ***** I've been looking for" Not to mention all the sexually in the fights between Batman and Catwoman.

She get's murdered by her boss, cats almost begin to eat her and revive her back from the dead so to speak, the whole grotesque nature of the penguin. Him biting the nose off a guy, stealing and wanting to kill all the babies of gotham. Catwoman's tongue down Max's mouth and then shocking him to death. The whole film is just twisted as hell.

It's a Tim Burton film I'll give you that, but not really how Batman is. My beef with Returns is that it was too "Burton-esque" Too whimsical and off-kilter. Tim has that style, if your watching a Tim Burton flick you know it, because they all have that look to them. It worked in Batman, in Returns it was just a bit too deep in Burton land.

I respect your comment. But as a Tim Burton Batman fan.

Such a wonderful hiney as well.

I actually think the sexuality of Catwoman (don't think i'm biased because of my avatar) was much more subtle, enjoyable and perhaps even necessary...

Nicole Kidman didn't work for me in Batman Forever... not that she would when I was 5 but she still doesn't now at 19...

I'm not saying she wasn't hot... she was just written as a horny goat in that film.

She used to look good back then now she ugly.

Kidman didn't age as gracefully as Michelle did, but both are beautiful women. Both have that subtle sexuality and grace.

I was 10 when Batman Forever came out, she did it for me then and she does it for me now. That is Nicole looking good. She's 42 and Pfieffer is 51 and she looks better still.
