Durban - A total of 22 dogs, among them 12 puppies, have died after a swarm of angry bees attacked people and animals at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Newcastle.

One of the committee members who rushed to the SPCA's offices to help, Janine de Waal, received at least 50 bee stings.

The poison from the bee stings was too much for Larry, an 80kg bull mastiff/Great Dane cross, who had been in tip-top condition.

SPCA chairperson Beulah Engelbrecht said: "Larry's front paws were a bloodied mess.

Puppies tried to burrow

"The bees stung his ears, eyes and mouth to such an extent that he bit his own tongue."

One of the animals was stung more than 200 times.

Engelbrecht said: "It was pandemonium. I've never experienced anything like it.

"The puppies tried to burrow into the soil to get away from the bees.

"It was unreal to watch the people running in the midst of the bees, trying to get away."

No one knows what caused the swarm to attack.

Five SPCA personnel and six committee members who rushed to the area after hearing of the attack, grabbed animals and ran into the office with them.

The injured animals were put into cages and rushed to the veterinary surgeon, who treated 30 dogs.

Beehive under Wendy house

Engelbrecht said: "The poison immediately affected the puppies' lungs and most of them were unconscious by the time they got to the vet."

The beehive was found under the floor of a Wendy house on the premises.

A pest-control company later removed it.

I asked a friend what superpower he'd want if he could have any. He said to control a swarm of bees. I laughed then...but the true power of it is shown here.

Johannesburg - About 50 young children were stung by bees at a day care centre in Pretoria on Monday, paramedics said.

Neighbours who tried to help, a paramedic and a police officer were also stung at the Hansel and Gretel day care centre shortly after 16:00, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman.

The majority of those stung were younger than seven.

Dollman did not know whether the bees had been provoked or not.

"When we arrived it was almost absolute chaos," he said.

He suspected the attack began in the garden, where some of the children had been playing.

Their panic then caused the bees to spread indoors where other children were sleeping.

Shock

"A lot of people are allergic and considering so many were stung, it's quite lucky no-one had an allergic reaction.

"Many of the victims were in a state of shock, but all the patients were in a stable condition. Many other people who were stung chose not to go to hospital."

Forty-eight people were taken to various hospitals in the area.

The only hospital that could confirm admissions was Montana where two boys of approximately eight years of age and one teacher would be kept for observation overnight.

PE rats 'the size of cats'

'No rat plague at No 1 Mil'

1 Military plagued by rats

1 300 rats 'bred out of control'

Army fighting new enemyJohannesburg - Parts of Port Elizabeth are being plagued by an unprecedented increase in the city's rat population, The Herald Online reported on Monday.

"There are rats the size of cats," said John Preller, CEO of the Hill Improvement District.

"It goes all the way from the top end of Rink Street to the harbour. I have had a myriad of complaints from businesses catering for tourism, such as restaurants."

Dries van Niekerk, chairperson of the Pest Controllers' Association, Eastern Province region, said rat-control programmes in privately or corporate-owned buildings had ceased over the past 10 years.

This had resulted in the rat population explosion.

Van Niekerk said filthy conditions in certain dilapidated, vandalised, and vagrant-occupied buildings on the Hill provided ideal breeding conditions for the rats.

Mandela Bay Development Agency chief executive officer Pierre Voges said: "I'm not denying (we have a serious rat problem) for a second. A lot of property owners have complained about it. I wrote to the municipality asking them to do something about the rats, but never got an answer."

Municipal environmental services business unit manager Dr Paul Martin said the areas concerned were being monitored and bait set out at several key spots.

Van Niekerk said large Norwegian rats, known as harbour rats, had originally been found in the harbour area but were now found throughout the city.

"They've grown accustomed to human beings and the hygiene problem on the Hill has resulted in a well-fed, well-furred and healthy rat population."

I was going to say the same thing. The animal kingdom is striking back against domesticated animals.
