I’ve also been super curious what a Robert in his prime vs The Mountain fight would look like. I think that would have been savage.

Yeah I would have loved to have seen him hammer in hand wearing that awesome stag helmet.

Ah thanks for that, I had forgotten. In the Show Dayne does get a good fight. Barristan still got a decent swan song, he took out a good number of Harpy before finally falling, but yeah, it wasn’t as much as I had been hoping to see from him.

It’s ironic that GRRM has said Dawn would give Dayne an edge, because a greatsword isn’t the best weapon for a one on one duel, but hey, it’s fantasy.

I personally am interested to see how Barristan fares going forward in the books. He’s still shown to be a very adept and dangerous warrior even at his age, and I feel we still have a few more fights with him before it’s all said and done.

Yes, he was given some chance to show that he was skilled and I guess you can only do so much with an actually old actor, but it did feel a bit too unimportant and small for a legendary knight like Barristan to go out.

It's possible that Dawn is fairly light as it's made from the white metal of a falling star (which I assume is a meteorite or something), so it has different properties than steel. A greatsword is at least good in that it has reach, which is very important in duels, and if it's light it can be maneuvered well. Still it's fantasy, just as you say, which is also why everyone are wielding swords, as that weapon is so iconic. The best primary weapon for a knight in real history would be some sort of polearm.

I agree, it will be interesting to see how he fares as he became a POV character, even if it wasn't planned initially but came out of necessity. He's both an interesting character in his own right and also sometimes a window into the past when he thinks back, as he was there for a lot of important events.

Yes, that would be a hell of a fight. Especially in the books where guys like Robert and The Hound are probably closer to the size of the Mountain in the show, and the Mountain is just impossibly large at nearly 8 feet and muscular. A real freak in both body and mind.

I have a feeling that the Mountain might win, as Robert was someone that, while of course very skilled, seemed to have a fighting style where he overpowered his opponents, but no one will overpower Ser Gregor.

Euron. He slayed the Kingslayer and killed a dragon with his powers. One of the most important characters in recent memory

Given how Robert seems to have delusions about his relationship with Lyanna, I’ve always wondered about this fight. Rhaegar was pretty badass, wasn’t he? I’ve always wondered if this fight didn’t go quite the way Robert said it did and if he had some help taking down Rhaegar or stabbed him in the back like Ned did to Arthur Dayne.

I suppose we will never know for sure, from the conversation in the tent between him and Ned I would have guessed he was telling the truth simply because the way he says "gods I was strong then" he says it with a hint of sadness that sort of made me think Robert realises that he is a shadow of his former self in almost every sense of the word.

I would have loved to see a Robert flashback showing him as a beast of a fighter.
