BLM Protests Across The World

You know things are bad when you think "Well.. at least they helped the man up after they assaulted him"

I mean, I see it as a good thing that someone did pretty much immediately respond to what had happened. Better videos of that incident show the cop who knocked him down being pulled aside by other officers. At least they're making an attempt in some fashion. And yes, some of these things are PR and stunts for videos, but positive momentum and messages do matter.

I honestly can hardly believe some of these riot cops are being dumb enough, in the current environment, especially after several incidents have been taped in previous days, to do anything when they could possibly get caught. They're not always the brightest of bulbs.

What we’re learning is that police may not only use excessive force, but that they may not even understand what that is. That bothers me as much as them doing it. It’s entirely possible, for instance, not to realize that shoving a particular person would cause them to trip or knock them down to the degree that happened, but why hasn't their training prepated them for that, and why do it in the first place if you're not being threatened (Rhetorical question)?

Here’s the thing. A lot of these tactics are legal, and use of force is widely approved in the paramilitary organization that police departments often are.

Pushing an old man to the ground for seemingly nothing obviously isn’t okay.

But part of the reason police beating on citizens with batons and gassing them and like isn’t resulting in mass suspensions and firings is that these are very much considered acceptable police tactics. The cops are permitted to use show of force as a deterrent. They’re allowed to clear the streets after a certain point. They are allowed to use chemical agents, batons, shields, and bodily force.

Now, that absolutely needs to change, because it just doesn’t seem like it’s always necessary, especially during what are largely peaceful protests. but the reason they’re still doing it is because these are widely approved tactics.

A lot of my friends who are protesting are shocked and horrified at the cops doing this, but others who have been to a number of protests over the years, are just treating it as business as usual. I guess they recognize that when cops ask politely and you don't leave, things will tend escalate to some kind of physical force. The cops seem to think that gassing people is less violent.

All of that unprovoked violence is within the limits of the law, but not justice in any real sense. I'm on board with the violence continnum concepts that are being bandied about now. Things should need to escalate to a certain point before a certain degree of violence is used.

I still don't understand why after all these years of police brutality and murders, states haven't made it mandatory for a psychologist to evaluate potential cops during their training in the academy.

It's not? I thought it was but it's easy to past a psych test.

I thought they did have to pass psychological evaluations.

I keep reading on how different cities are moving to make the chokehold illegal...like how it was illegal and they still used it to kill Eric Garner
What you don't understand is, they didn't technically use a chokehold on Eric Garner... No seriously, that is the argument I have seen.

I think the combination of Trump's presidency, the social and economic consequences of the pandemic, and how blatant the three murders were has now led to a different situation when when even Eric Garner was murdered or Kap was blackballed out of the NFL. Everyone is basically having to get onboard, and a lot quicker then ever before.

Trump and the Republicans blatant greed has left an America that was not going to take trio of senseless murders and do nothing about them.

Well NASA astronauts supposedly have to pass strict psychological evaluations and we still got a love triangle where one woman drove cross country intending to murder the other one with a hammer while wearing a diaper so she didn’t have to slow down.....

Who said that "it is invalid to have legitimate concerns about prolonged gatherings" *looks around* No one said that. That's a strawman. OR at least that's a small minority that don't even need to be brought up
What I and others are saying is that this could've been avoided if the powers that be a) were more clear on their stance on the virus (a lot of state's reopening plans are just as bad when it comes to the virus as the protests) and b) did something about racial injustices when they had so many chances years before the virus was a problem. The only real solution is for people to stay home, sit there, and take it. Is that what we want people to do? The only other solution I saw is protest in your car which just isn't feasible on a large scale. And a lot of protest organizers are promoting wearing masks or protesting in their car.
No one is downplaying the virus, no one is saying it's invalid to virus. But again, this could've been avoided. They chose to ignore it and now...

And as far as the looters, that's such a small percentage of what's happening and it's been said so many times that at least some of the looting is being done by people that don't have Black Lives Matter top of mind. And even the ones who are BLM and looting, I'm not condoning it, but once again this could've been avoided. And also, I can't be the only one who in anger has smashed something. Even if it's something I own. This unfortunately is the large scale version of that. And I wish that the large amount of people I see complaining about these rioters do the same for these ones. Because it seems like when it's only national news and shown as a tragedy when it comes to POC issues.

And of course, there are more elections than just presidential ones...and yet it's still the same no matter when they vote? So my point still stands. People should go vote, but let's not pretend that voting for whatever position is gonna be a cure all.

EDIT: And why bring Twitter into this? I don't get how people don't seem to know that Twitter is such a tiny microsm of actual people on Earth or even the US, that even if a lot of people are saying something on Twitter...it's such a small percentage of the conversation so much of the time

I appreciate where you're coming from, and I certainly wasn't accusing anyone here of those things-- but I think we are remiss to just dismiss Twitter as irrelevant at this point. It is one of the largest and most powerful social media platforms in the world. It's not representative of everyone everywhere, but it in some ways can be very representative of some of the prevailing ideas and sentiments in our culture, both on the left and right. The lack of the leading medical experts speaking up has been frankly very concerning. So has the silence and in some cases, full throated defenses when it comes to the rioting and looting.

You had over 100 medical experts write a letter to DeBlasio pleading that he close schools in NYC. And now mostly crickets. There are most assuredly going to be huge swaths of America wondering why we have just destroyed the economy and put our lives on hold for months if suddenly the virus is a secondary concern. This is an election year, and we're kidding ourselves to think that won't be a factor with the swing voters that will decide this election. I just wish more experts would speak up so we here on the left preaching science and facts, aren't rendered hypocrites of galactic proportions if and when we see a huge surge of Covid cases.

You make a great point that the lack of clarity with re-opening and how that is a contributing factor. It just feels like a perfect storm of bad circumstances right now and it's a LOT to process. That is really where I'm coming from. It's overwhelming, and I'm scared for country. Let me just conclude by saying that I admire the bravery of the protesters, and if this shines a huge spotlight on police brutality and the need for systemic change that's a GREAT thing, obviously. I am very concerned, but still hoping this will have more positive effects than negative. And I will leave it at that.

Thank you. At least someone understands the essence of the story. No one remembers the love triangle, or that it was astronauts, or even the parties names. Everyone, and Darth means everyone, remembers the cross country drive in a diaper.

*glares at Noah Hawley*

Maybe she should have applied to the local PD?

Can I appoint you as my spokesperson? You've basically summed up every thought, feeling, and concern I've had about this whole situation twice now way better than I've fumbled to do.

Oh yeah they do, my bad.

Could've fooled me however.
Yeah exactly.
Background tests, psych evals they all can be passed pretty easily. They really are just to catch the very obviously disturbed. And even that isn't foolproof

It's a question of what it has become a secondary concern to. In this case, the pandemic that has been killing Americans since 1776.

I prefer your posts. I'm taking a queue from the president; anything over a paragraph and I forget what I read the sentence before.

For real, we SHOULD be afraid. It's a great day for George Floyd.....the president said that.....that's not a typo.....he said it.....for real.....

It'd be like the montage of empty football stadiums and **** at the beginning of Endgame. Just entire forums, barren wastelands.
So basically the upcoming NFL season. But not do to the coronavirus. It will be because black players and their teammates have the audacity to ask the cops to stop killing them.
