Box Office 2006 Part 2

J Alba's Lover said:
I think your talkin about Cineaman or whatever his name is. He was the one saying it was gonna make a boat load.

Yes, thank you J alba's lover, it was he who said something along the lines that it would make more than The Da Vinci Code and make over $300 million domestic AND that Superman has more fans than God. What a tool.

'Pirates' Saves the Box Office

If it hadn't been for Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Hollywood would have ended 2006 about the way it did 2005, with the worst box-office performance in a decade, according to Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office trackers Media by Numbers. "One movie can make the difference, not only with a box-office boost but a psychological boost for Hollywood, '' Dergarabedian told the Associated Press on Tuesday. ''You take one or two blockbusters out of the mix, it can really impact the bottom line." Indeed, according to Dergarabedian, admissions rose only 2.6 percent in 2006 pushing box-office revenue up just 4.2 percent, not even enough to offset the 5 percent drop in revenue in 2005. (Revenue is expected to reach $9.3 billion this year, 100 million short of 2004's take.)

Well, SR ends the year in the top five domestic and top eight worldwide. Not bad for a "flop".

In general, I´d say 2006 wasn´t a great year for the big blockbuster movies. I really enjoyed SR but I´m aware that it´s controversial among fans and not everyone´s cup of tea... I liked Cars, but still felt it was one of the weaker Pixar movies, not nearly as good as Toy Story or Nemo or Incredibles or even, say, Monsters Inc. I liked MI:III, but still felt JJ Abrams was capable of much more. Didn´t care for Ice Age 2, and I don´t care if I get lynched, didn´t care much for POTC2, felt they tried to turn the franchise into something that it isn´t. I have yet to see Cassino Royale, but all indications are it´s the one truly memorable movie of the pack. Just getting people to speak higher of the franchise than "cheesy and formulaic, but fun" was already quite an accomplishment.

I think this year was pretty darn good for movies, as for me I can name 15+ movies that were worth the price of admission, probably more.

SR was just flat out unimpressive and mediocre. a very dissapointing film right in the same boat as X men 3.

I personally thought both spy flicks, MiIII and CR, were the best of the blockbusters this year.

MI3 made more than Superman returns... worldwide. Interesting
Studios care a lot more about the domestic BO, they get a much bigger share of the BO than in the foreign markets.

Warner bros probably had their worst year ever. Did any of their movies even break even. They'll rebound this year with Harry Potter though.
