"The Dark Knight" has grossed an estimated $63-$65 million in its first day of business to be the single biggest opening day in history - easily beating Sony's "Spider-Man 3" with $59.8 million.

The film opened at midnight and that single session pulled in $18.2 million, outgrossing Fox's "Star Wars, Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith" midnight screenings which took in $16.9 million in 2005. Estimates for the weekend are now in flux with the $151 million three-day opening weekend record set by "Spider-Man 3" looking likely to fall.

so is TDK doing really so good like people were saying for months?

The Dark Knight Breaks Opening Weekend Record!
Source: ComingSoon.net July 20, 2008

Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight has earned $155.34 million to top Spider-Man 3 for best opening weekend at the box office.

The weekend estimates show Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins follow-up more than $4 million ahead of the $151.1 million first weekend for Spider-Man 3 in May of 2007.

The Dark Knight has also broken Spider-Man 3's record ($4.7 million) for best debut in IMAX theaters with $6.2 million in 94 locations.

The film opened in a record 4,366 theaters nationwide and broke the new single and opening day records on Friday with $66.4 million.

Looks like Hancock is going to break 200 mil.

ComingSoon's predictions:

The X-Files: I Want to Believe: $21 to 24 million opening weekend on its way to $65 million total.

Step Brothers: $27 to 30 million opening weekend and $80 to 90 million total.

I think Step Brothers will be #1 but TDK will take #2 and decrease those numbers for X-Files.

No. TDK is going to be number 1 again and there's no disputing that. Even if TDK were to drop off by an enormous 70% next week (Which won't happen due to its word of mouth and the fact that it's making 20+ million a day even on weekdays) it would STILL make $47 million which is probably double what Step Brothers will make. Like I said though, there's no chance TDK will even drop that much. Realistically it will make maybe $75 million next week. You really think Step Brothers has any chance of doing $70+?

Box Office Report predicts $82 million for TDK's second weekend, a drop of only 48%. That would really be amazing if it can achieve that. If that happens then I think it's no longer a question if it can reach $400 million, but if it can become the second movie of all time to cross the $500 million mark.

Jesus...

The Dark Knight crossed the $200 million mark in just five days, easilly beating the previous record of eight days. So far TDK has grossed $203,8 million. Spider-Man 3 made $169,4 million the five first days.

Although that's very doubtful, I would love to see TDK grossing more than Titanic. Still, everything more than $300m or even $400m will be awesome
