Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight is taking aim at another box-office record, hoping to reach $300 million in domestic ticket sales faster than any other film. Today's (Friday) Daily Variety observed that the movie "has a real shot" at doing so by the end of the weekend, thereby hitting the $300-million mark in 10 days. The current record is held by last year's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which reached $300 million in 16 days. Star Wars -- Episode III: Revenge of the Sith did it in 17 days and Spider-Man 3 in 19. The chances of The Dark Knight remaining a superforce at the box office this weekend appear to be enhanced by mediocre tracking for the films that are making their debut this weekend, including the new X-Files sequel and the comedy, Step Brothers. "Everyone's playing for No. 2 this weekend," Sony marketing chief Jeff Blake told the Los Angeles Times. Moreover, some analysts have noted that a large percentage of moviegoers who bought tickets for the Batman film earlier in the week were return customers. The film grossed a phenomenal $24.5 million on Monday, $20.9 million on Tuesday and $18.4 million on Wednesday, to bring its total gross on Wednesday to $222.1 million. Assuming that the film earned $15-18 million on Thursday, it would need only to do about 40 percent percent of the business it did last weekend between today and Sunday to hit $300 million in 10 days.

The Dark Knight Reaches a Record $314.2M in 10 Days!
Source: Nielsen EDI, Box Office Mojo July 27, 2008

Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight earned an estimated $75.6 million from 4,366 theaters in its second weekend, surpassing Shrek 2's $72.2 million for biggest second weekend ever.

Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins follow-up has reached $314.2 million in just 10 days, another record. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest held the previous record in the amount of days it took to cross the $300 million mark - it needed 16 days to do so. On Monday, The Dark Knight will surpass Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to become the biggest movie of 2008 domestically.

The film is already up to #23 on the all-time domestic blockbuster list and has a good shot at surpassing Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope's $460.998 million (not counting inflation) to become the second-biggest domestic earner of all-time, trailing only Titanic's $600.788 million.

Damn It took 2 Weeks 2 Fricken Weeks and the Dark Knight is already at #2 box office Wise for the Whole Year. Wonder if the actually will be bigger and push the Dark Knight Over Iron Man to be #1.

The Dark Knight has made $314m in one week, whereas it took about three months from IM to reach that point!

How much more life does Indy have in it? I want to see if it has a shot at beating IM.

All that money, good god

It going to be hard for any movie in the near future to beat TDK if what is predicted for it comes true.

Box Office Report predicts a 43% drop for The Dark Knight for its third weekend. That means it would be close to $400 million after the weekend. Anyway, the movie should have no problems beating the record for fastest to $400 million

I thought TDK crossed the 400 million mark???

The Dark Knight broke the $400 million barrier on Monday, according to Warner Bros.' estimate. Early figures put Batman's tally for the day at $6.28 million, which takes its cumulative gross to $400,031,000 in just 18 days, a remarkable 25 days faster than Shrek 2, the previous record holder.

ComingSoon's predictions:

Pineapple Express: Expect this to make $15 to 17 million in its first couple days, and then another $26 to 29 million over the three-day weekend. It will probably end up around $90 million or slightly above with Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder nipping at its tail

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2: $7 to 9 million on Wednesday and Thursday and another $11 to 13 million on the weekend; Expect this to make close to $40 million by the time it leaves theaters

On MSNBC.com, film commentator Erik Lundegaard argued that there is little chance that The Dark Knight will be able to challenge Titanic for the title of the highest-grossing movie in history. Suggesting that from here on out the movie will depend on repeat business if it is to gross $600 million -- as Titanic did -- Lundegaard commented, "Fanboys are fanboys, but there are no repeat customers like teenage girls in love with Leonardo DiCaprio." Lundegaard noted that the fall-off in ticket sales for Knight closely mirrors that of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. If it continues to do so, he observed, Knight will probably end up with a domestic total of $515 million.
