Backup Films Unveils Neil Marshall TV Series ‘Britannia’

Paris-based financier and producer Backup Films has unveiled its first ever English language TV series with British filmmaker Neil Marshall’s Britannia. The series, which Backup will be shopping at Mip next week, charts the Roman invasion of what would become Great Britain in 43 A.D. and the rise of iconic female warrior Boudicca. The eight part series, which does not have a broadcaster attached yet, will follow the growing relationship between Boudicca and Roman Consul Cassius who ultimately unite to lead an insurgency against Roman Emperor Claudius

The well-respected Backup partners Jean-Baptiste Babin, Joel Thibout and David Atlan-Jackson have been busy expanding their company to work across both French and English language fare, as well as film and now TV. The company co-financed Julianne Moore-starrer Still Alice and also has Robert Pattinson-starrer Brimstone in the pipelines. Backup is also a partner on French pay TV Canal + show The Returned.
Britannia is being pitched as an earthy swords and scale high-end show that can appeal to audiences. Neil Marshall, who directed Game of Thrones’ Emmy-nominated ep The Watchers on the Wall, is exec producing along with Elizabeth Stanley and Thomas Bliss (Children of Men). Martha Little, who created the show, also exec produces.

Sounds ok. I enjoyed Neil Marshall's Centurion. I wish Neil Marshall would get back to making feature films.
