Candy explodes in girls' face

this story is from 2003

the mythbusters episode showed that heating the jawbreaker would cause the inner layer to heat up faster than the outer layer and the inner candy could be really effing hot, but to get an explosion of that magnitude there had to be some kind of contamination

It was obviously tampered. Or else the candy company had one jawbreaker that had just the right chemical composition, and she had just the right environment to start a reaction that would cause that.

i think they also said that contamination could have come from a chemical used to clean the machines and trace amounts could have been left in the candy

Man, this practical joke candy is getting REALLY sophisticated.

The chemical change needed would be much greater than a single coating on the outside. And there's a great chance it would've found it's reaction well before getting to her, if such is the case.

contamination on the inside is what they were referring to.

Even then, the reaction should have most likely occured, as it probably was temperature based.

Unless it was like a slow chemical reaction, then she got lucky.

But the chances of that cleaner causing such reaction is very very low.

I await the results of the query.
