First Avenger CapAm with a gun?

Watching the new trailer, I was a little surprised to see Cap using a gun so much. I was always under the impression that he seldom used a gun in the comics. But I'm no expert....is that not correct?

In the books Cap has very rarely used guns in the modern era, but he has been shown to have used them in WW2.

The director probably realized that Cap without a gun in the middle of a war was probably stupid.

There was a lengthy discussion last year on the boards, tho not sure if it had a dedicated thread.

It does IMO beg the question. If he brandishes a gun in "First Avenger", out of necessity, will he need them in the films that follow? and if not, why not?

Can't say for certain without knowing what he'll face in the modern era. But we do know one thing...he won't be in the middle of a gaint world war. So maybe in the modern era the gun won't be needed. I don't see Cap needing it to take out just a group of bad guys.

Perhaps, but if he's introduced battling a global threat, Skull and Hydra. Fighting just a group of bad guys in subsequent films is a bit of a demotion.

Depends on the story, who he fights, etc. Also remember that in the modern day he can have access to non-lethal weaponry that exists for real, never mind a plausible fictional solution the writers can dream up.

Not saying I'd like to see him with a gun in the modern day, but they could do it without it being a lethal option.

Good point. Didn't even think about the options of non-lethal weaponry.

Not to be argumentative, but what did you have in mind here. A gun can be "non lethal", especially in fiction and in the right hands, i.e. the Lone Ranger shoots the guns out of the bad guys hands.

Capt. America is a soldier, and in WW2 they have to defeat the enemies known as Nazi/HYDRA, so of course he will use a gun. Throwing shield to disable the soldiers that he encountered may be nice for a few times, but it cannot substitute the efficiency of spraying bullets around.

Yeah I remember that being a big discussion last year.

But to answer the thread starters question. Yes in the comics in WW2 Cap has used a gun.

I'm all for him using a gun, as for one, he's a soldier, and two, it looks friggin' awesome. But there better be a reasonable answer as to why he eventually stops using a piece. Doesn't make any sense if he's got no qualms about shooting nameless/faceless HYDRA agents but not to put two in Red Skull's head.

only one of those counts. one is bucky, one is in world war two so moot to the discussion, and the other is just regular ultimate captain america who is cap in the same way that u.s. agent is cap (aesthetically only)

Not to be argumentative, but what did you have in mind here. A gun can be "non lethal", especially in fiction and in the right hands, i.e. the Lone Ranger shoots the guns out of the bad guys hands.

Rubber bullets, tranquillizers, Tasers etc, are real world options for taking down an enemy without killing them and being reasonably sure they won't be getting up in a hurry.

Being such a good shot as to be able to shoot the guns out of their hands is another option, but that wasn't what I had in mind as I was considering him wading into a large group of armed opponents and keeping them down. That kind of thing is better suited for one on one gunfights. In a crowd that only disarms each foe momentarily (by the time he has shot the gun out the 2nd guys hand the first one would be picking his own up again and so on)

In the movieverse world it wouldn't be a stretch for Shield to have developed some kind of stun gun that he could use.

Well if he did that then HYDRA would fall meaning that Cap would have gotten medals for one incident involving Red Skull's death, world peace yatta yatta yatta, and he would have been out of a job. Let him live, keep stopping his henchman every now and then, bask in the spotlight
