Carl Erik Rinsch currently has two projects over at Universal. Those are "47 Ronin" with Keanu Reeves attatched and "The Creature Of The Black Lagoon".

Ridley Scott is Carl's mentor and long time teacher and Rinsch's works for RSA (Ridley Scott's company). Scott has praised him many times and recommended him to Fox for the Alien prequel. While Fox complied to this initially they ended up convincing Scott to return to the franchise he started.

Now RSA along with Phillips held this Unicorn film ad event/competition in which all the films had to use the same piece of dialogue. Five of the most promising directors from Scott's company are the one's who submitted their films/ads and took place in this demo.

Carl Erik Rinsch ad "The Gift" has gained some attention in the online film community and had already caught the eyes of the executives over at the major studios (WB, Fox, Universal etc).

Now a bidding war has begun to adapt the Carl Erik Rinsch ad into a full feature film. Universal and Fox seem to be the favorites due to their existing relationship with Rinsch and Scott.

Another piece of info is that the studios don't want to adapt "The Gift" but the continuation/expanded story that Rinsch has already written and designed. "The Gift" will act as a spiritual prequel instead.

"Small" has been described as: "I have also learned that Rinsch has met with various nobel prize winning scientists and theorists in designing a world and a narrative that could be scientifically plausible. He’s pretty hardcore about creating a world that could actually exist, ala 2001. I’ve heard that in the past, Rinsch has joked that the project is a mix between 2001, Bladerunner and Doctor Zhivago with a bit of Bourne-style action. Sounds pretty awesome and absurd at the same time (but I think that is the intent)."

Here is "The Gift" and design and concept art from "Small":

i bow down to this short clip.

but i have one complaint. and its in the chase scene. he is doing the same mistakes like other new action directors are doing. way to much close ups during the action. he needs to pull the camera a little back.

if he knows how to work with actors and if he understands that characters in movies are the most important part of the movie then give this guy a big budget franchise . now..........right now

Havent seen the clip as I am in work and it wont play but these pictures look very intriguing I have to say.

some of the designs above remind of old school Star Wars and we need more of that.

the bottom line is that we need more movies like this with studio backing. But keep that indie vibe that makes these short films feel so fresh.

I hope out of the two studios bidding on it, WB gets it.

grey,dirt and rust?

:woot:

i love that industrial look of the original films. Everything now (besides District 9) is too slick. Too plasticy.

I couldn't agree more!!

*source amnesia* I read somewhere that he is possibly being considered for the Superman reboot. So I got 20 that says WB gets it even if Rinsch doesn't get Superman.

I got a five that says "pass the pepper".

i think a comic book or a big franchise is coming down his way...

This is the guy Ridley wanted for the Alien prequel.... But fox didn't want him.

that short was awesome. I'm so glad to see all these new sci fi film makers crawling out of the wood work again.

is universal in the bidding? he's doing some work there now, so its possible they may take it.

universal hasn't had a hit in a while and they're struggling; i doubt they want to do something like this even though it may not cost them too much money. i mean, they just cancelled that Josh Brolin movie just 3 weeks before the shoot.

The only studios I'd be comfortable with are WB and (hear me out) Fox. The former because they've consistently proven to meddle out of the director's business most of the time. The latter because Ridley has some clout there and could be his bodyguard to interference.

Either way, I really hope one of these sci-fi visionaries breaks through with a blockbuster. I've been DYING for some big-budget original sci-fi movies.

I read the Slashfilm article and it also has this :
There have been rumors that Rinsch made The Gift for $1-2 million, but I’ve heard that the actual budget was a tenth of that. Rinsch is a very smart example of a next generation filmmaker because he has embraced the technology. In my original posting, I commented on how the computer generated worlds and characters have been almost seamlessly blended with live-action. Sure, it isn’t completely seamless. Sure. you can sometimes tell the cars are cg, and yes, the robot sometimes feels cg…. but what people don’t realize is that more than 95% of that chase sequence was completely created using CGI. Not just the robot, his futuristic cycle and the cars, but the entire city. No background plates. Watch it again. It will give you a whole new level of respect for what was accomplished.

If he made that for just 100-200.000 , that i could see Universal wanting to choose him. THey were also the ones who funded District 9 and look how well that turned out for them.

i knew by watching the video what was CGI and nothing special for 2009. i could render this out in 30-50 days on my computer(not a new computer).

2D projected matte painting composed wiht live action is already possible for 7 years. and now it can be done on a home computer.

its a fantastic short movie. but come on.............lets be realistic here.
