And much better than the guilty pleasure flick. Tell me what you think of the Brothers:

Mario Mario: A Brooklyn plumber that lives with his brother, Luigi. Mario is a practical man whose greatest fear is to be without a loved one. On the night before their wedding, his fiancée, Pauline, was killed. Afterwards he became exceptionally bitter, and turned to alcoholism, with hints at substance abuse. When Luigi would try to intervene, Mario would become very defensive. The night before the brothers were separated, Mario ended up getting into a nasty bar room fight with Luigi.

Soon the police arrived to take Mario into custody. That night in his jail cell, Mario has a terrible dream. When he awakes, he finds himself in a strange new land. His first priority is figuring out where he has arrived, but when he learns of Princess Toadstool, his priorities are reshuffled.

Luigi Mario: He idolizes his older brother. Sadly, his world comes crashing down around him after Pauline’s death. Mario’s alcohol consumption greatly upsets Luigi, who begins to wonder what else his brother has turned to after Pauline’s death. No matter how hard he tries, Luigi just can’t get Mario to turn away from the bottle. One night, Luigi goes out looking for Mario, and finds him in the local pub, dead drunk. Luigi gets a bit more forceful in trying to get Mario to quite the alcohol. Luigi’s attempt ends in a nasty brawl. The police arrive and take Mario into custody. Luigi returns to the apartment, a bloody and emotional wreck. In the middle of the night, Luigi has a very unusual dream. When he awakes from it, he finds himself in a strange new land.

Pauline: Mario’s late fiancée, who was murdered in Brooklyn on the night before the wedding.

Well, what do you think so far? Constructive criticism is welcome, and please be as harsh as needed.

You're off to a great start. I like this gritty take on Mario, I've always wanted to see that. Keep it up, I want to see more. :yay:

It's really cool so far. So, they dream and basically awake in the mushroom kingdom? Nice take. I though up of some realistic stuff on Mario, but I tried not to stray away from the video games too much. Are they plumbers? If so, you can incorporate it as a failing family business as another reason to mario's alcoholism. Luigi can try and take over when Mario's in jail, but one man can't save the business and it bankrupts. I would try and make family a big theme. I mean, they're Italians from Brooklyn.

Thanks. I wasn't quite sure how people would react to such a makeover. I'm glad you guys like the ideas. Octavius, a small theme about family business is a nice idea, one that I'll play around with once I've mapped out the Mushroom Kingdom, Toads, Koopas, Goombas, Yoshis, etcetera. My primary concern was to create a feasible method for the Brothers to get from Brooklyn to the Mushroom Kingdom, which has been changed. It still works out, perhaps even better than the original.

Now that I have that small detail out of the way, open the floodgates! :woot:

Bowser Koopa: Once a softspoken koopaling who refused to pick sides in the Klan Wars (Koopa Klan, if you're thinking of a different organization). When the Wars came to his region, Bowser retreated into the mountains, where he fell in with a group of outcast sorcerers known as Magikoopa. When he was preparing for one of the trials on the path to the rank of Magikoopa, Bowser entered a surreal dreamworld.

He came face to face with Wart, the Koopa Kreator. Wart gave Bowser a mission to unite the Koopa Klans. He gave Bowser the physical strength and political cunning needed to end the Klan War. Upon returning form his meditation, Bowser more fully resembled the Koopa we all know and love.

With his new talents, Bowser united the Klans and proclaimed himself "King of the Koopas". He then appointed Kamek his de-facto leader and retreated into the mountains, to the very cave where he first traveled to Wart's domain (Subcon). Recently, there have been rumblings in the Koopa Kingdom about a planned takeover of the Mushroom Kingdom...

Goomba: Though they seem to be distant relatives of the Toads, no one is sure where they came from. A Goomba is to a Toad as an ape is to a man. Goombas come in different forms, adapted to suit their environment. Despite these variations in appearance, they all share one common feature-a more deformed version of a Toad's "cap". Early on in the Mushroom Kingdom's existence, Toads and Goombas frequently clashed, which culminated into a civil war. Most of the more intelligent Goombas were wiped out, and the species was forced to resort to inbreeding in order to survive. Rumors have it that an Elder Goomba resides somewhere in the uncharted wilds of the Primeval Isles, though no Toad has taken it upon himself to investigate this rumor.

Toads: The main inhabitant of the Mushroom Kingdom. They stand about five feet six inches, including their "cap". The "cap" in question is a natural part of their body. Normally pacifists who enjoy the finner things in life, Toads can more than hold their own in battle. Most eerie about a Toad is his or her eyes-black and beady, never blinking. The pollen found in their caps is a defense mechanism that can be weaponized in various ways, such as coatings for spear tips and arrowheads. A non-Toad stabbed with a pollen-coated spear will become completely numb, rendering them defenseless. The pollen was key to their victory over the Goombas.

my only thing about it is that i don't think they should be called mario mario and luigi mario. i never liked that idea. nintendo has stated several times that they don't have last names. the mario bros title is more like a mistake. i mean, you can call em mario mario and luigi mario, but i personally don't think they need last names.

I like that you made the goombas and toads real life creatures, not some tiny cartoony looking things. If you get a good story going, and have artistic talent and/or know and trust someone who could do this, I suggest you make a few rough sketches of these characters, I think it would be cool to see your interpretations of these characters. Keep it up, I like it a lot so far.
