15 minutes ago, Christina Aguilera premiered her new music video, Not Myself Tonight, on her official YouTube channel. I'm not gonna post it since it's pretty graphic and SHH has been strict lately...but atleast you know where to find it.

Anyway, when Aguilera made her debut back in 1999 her biggest competition was Britney Spears. That was 11 years ago. Times have changed. Lady Gaga rules the pop scene now and she's a different beast from Spears. So, Aguilera pulls her best Gaga impersonation to compete.

Does she succeed?

See, this is something I had a little bit of a disagreement with JP on Facebook about. When Christina debuted in 1999 it was during Britney's ''I'm really innocent but look at me act dirty" days, Christina debuted with Genie in a Bottle which is in the same vien as that. And as Britney evolved into a dirtier artist who dropped the pretense Aguilera did the same. She was one thing Britney's not though. A good singer. Christina A's by far got the better voice.

Then Britney had her meltdown and Christina took over her slot with a old but fresh take on pop music with her 1920's influenced album. I felt Christina was finally getting somewhere that wasn't mirrored by another artist first. Then Britney came back and Aguilera had her baby. She took the family time off and during that time she reflected she didn't even know who Gaga was and if it was a man or a woman.

Now Gaga's the queen of Pop Music. Christina Aguilera comes back and she starts to mimic Gaga's eccentricity clothing wise, her dance club beats, and more. It's a shame really, because Aguilera clearly has talent, but she's coasting her career off others.

PS: I just want to say I'm not being harsh to XTina, I think she's immensely talented, and I like her music no matter what, but it does feel like she's coasting her success off what others are doing sometimes.

I honestly felt the vid was emulating Madonna more than Gaga. A whole third of the vid was a riff on "Express Yourselve", standing in front of a steamy, blue-lit industrial background, wearing a 30s era mansuit. Not to mention the freak-nasty dancing in a church. That's a lot more Madonna than Gaga.

Now Gaga's the queen of Pop Music.
:whatever: Are you serious? Isn't it a little early to be calling Lady Gaga the queen of pop? She has ONE ALBUM for goodness sakes. Two if you count the one that's basically an extension of her first.

Anyway, Christina will never be irrelevant because she's talented.

Well Gaga's album is the highest selling in like, a decade. You can't go anywhere without someone mentioning her or seeing or hearing one of her songs.

So yea she is the Queen of Pop at this moment in time.

Really? I haven't read that anywhere.

The same thing could have been said about Britney a couple of years ago.

A title like "Queen of Pop" is a lasting title that is given to someone who has been around for a long time and has influenced MANY other artists (like MJ being the the king of pop). Being the most popular singer of the moment does not automatically qualify you to be the queen of pop.

Just watched the video... damn! She is a naughty, naughty girl! Don't like the song though.

Don't think she is copying Lady Gaga at all though really. That techno/electronic sound has been coming into the mainstream for a good few years now, Gaga wasn't the first to do it.

I'll stick to my drum n bass, dub step and funky house though thanks :awesome:

Well it went quintuple platinum or something ridiculous like that.

Yea, and what were they calling her at the time? The Queen of Pop. Or the Princess? Something like that anyway.

Maybe in a perfect world it would be. But you know how shallow the press and all that is surely?

We'll see how long Gaga lasts and how much influence she leaves on music.

Personally i don't care, i despise "pop" music in most cases.

OMG! poor girl, she's obviously tryin' to get hits by copying GaGa's style, guys...just look at that video, the way it's filmed, the scenes...even the song...

You're being sarcy right?

They called her a pop princess. Which is what Gaga is imo. There can be several princesses. But only one queen.

You're right about that unfortunately. Especially the bold.

Here's the "clean" version, so I guess it's okay to post.

Gaga's gonna last a while, people who can't clearly see that or just using blinders for the hell of using blinders. Woman has the most popular music videos on Vevo and Youtube. 6 number 1 hits in a row.

People changing their sound to mimic the sound she's got going for her. People that had lasting success before she came along! But this isn't the Lady Gaga thread, this is a thread about Christina A.

You're right, it isn't. So I'll conclude by saying that there are no guarantees in the music business because it is fickle.

You're acting as though that electric/techno sound was introduced to pop music by Lady Gaga.

It wasn't.

No one said it was, but Xtina clearly has a tendency(sp?) to copy the big names at that time. Now is that her fault or the record labels etc? Dunno. She has talent, but she seems too much of a copy cat.

Fair point. I'm guessing the label is making her do it.

Or she could be genuinely influenced by her peers because she is a fan of them. Doesn't mean it is straight up copying.

The label obviously made her a Britney clone with her first album, but I don't agree that Stripped was at all a rip off of Britney was doing at the time.

This video does have a Gaga-esque feel to it, and it really bugs me since I love Xtina and don't like Gaga. I also generally don't like dance/techno music and I'm pretty worried about this album.

I didn't say that anywhere in this thread. Gaga brought it back though and made it the hit thing to do and now everyone is going with that.

Two if you count the one that's basically an extension of her first.

I count it as two because The Fame is loaded with filler while the Fame Monster is mostly a small collection of great songs. There's also signs of lyrical growth compared to the Fame.

Britneys still the biggest name & draw in the pop business dont kid yourselves. Gaga's the biggest rookie since Britney, and has had a lot of success, but itll have to continue. Gaga is a a pop princess, but for a long time, Britney Spears was America's princess. Xtina was kind of her unpopular stepsister.

Aguilera never had the personal charm and charisma Britney has, and that's why she's taken a huge tumble in the last 5 years, while Britney, despite at times being a total mess, has always had a large, loyal fanbase and was readily accepted as "back" by the public. Talent only gets people so far.

To most, Xtina is boring, and copying someone else wont change that. I dont think its fair to say shes totally copying Gaga, because Xtina's has an "out there" style for a decade.

AGREE AGREE AGREE!

i LOVE britney. i DO think she is a good singer. i think she USED to be a very good singer. better than average. now id say she is good enough... and her music reflects that. she hardly sings anymore. she's always been a much less talented singer than Christina though. but you are 100% right. Britney was Americas little sweetheart. even when she got kinda ****ty.

christina is IMMENSELY talented. i think she's been doing her own thing for a while now. and im a little turned off by her new direction. i hope this is just this and a few other tracks on the album and not the whole thing. to be quite honest i think Xtina might be the only person out there who can compete with Gaga in this way. Britney sure isnt up for it anymore. and i dont want her to. Xtina and her image.... it doesnt matter if she comes off as a ****.

Britney though... she def go in the other direction and steer VERY FAR away from the ****ty naked dancing, etc. if she went a little more wholesome i think that would do wonders for her. she needs the credibility, and she just cant compete with Gaga and Xtina on that level anymore.

Im actually more excited about Xtina's new movie and the soundtrack to that more than her new album.
