A songwriter is reportedly suing Coldplay over accusations that the band stole three of his songs.

Los Angeles resident Sammie Lee Smith, who describes himself as "talented" but "unknown", filed the lawsuit in LA County Superior Court this week.

Smith alleges that he originally penned the group's most famous hits 'Yellow', 'Clocks' and 'Trouble', and that the four-piece later stole them.

In the lawsuit, Smith also claimed to have written around 4,000 songs since he began writing music in 1976, stating that he has "recorded approximately 100 tapes, each tape containing approximately 40 songs".

The singer has now moved to have the band cease playing the trio of offending songs live and is also demanding a considerable amount of money in damages, TMZ reports.

This is not the first time that Coldplay have made headlines over accusations of plagiarism. US guitarist Joe Satriani filed a lawsuit against them in December 2008 saying that they had imitated his 2004 track 'If I Could Fly' for their worldwide hit 'Viva La Vida'.

Although the case was later dismissed, another artist came forward in the same month to allege that the band stole his concept for their 'Strawberry Swing' video.

I knew they were no talent ass clowns. :cmad:

I'm surprised to hear that someone wants to take credit for songs by Coldplay.

Yeah. To be like Coldplay you'd have to cut your balls off and start eating cardboard.

****in' *****es.

& that isn't even that worst part. You would have to have sex with Gwyneth Paltrow!

Coldplay suck anyway. So overrated. Want a REAL British band? Kasabian. That is all.

so.. who are they covering this time..? the Joe Satriani cover was cool

Its one thing Satriani making these claims since the song was just released regarding a smilar sounding song its another thing entirely when its some guy making claims about their biggest hits about a decade after their release... I mean, what? This guy just noticed.

Friend: Hey, you should listen to this, man...
*Turns on radio*
Sammie Lee Smith: What, man..?
*Clocks is turned up by friend*
SLS: Hey...
SLS: Hey... wait a sec-ond...
SLS: This is...
SLS: This is that song I wrote over a decade a go...
Friend: I know...
SLS: So some prick's stealing my song..? When was this released?
Friend: Apparently about adecade ago.
SLS: Really?
Friend: I know... its the first I've heard about it too. Apparently these guys are kind of big. Supposedly they've sold a sh**load of records.
SLS: Yeah, this is the first I've heard of them... What else have they made?
Friend: Well, I thought you might ask that... I went out to buy their tape and whenI got to the store I found they had these new things called CDs throughout the store.
SLS: CDs?
Friend: Yeah, aparently they're like a thinner smaller version of an LP which can hold a whole lot of music on them.
SLS: Yeah, so they're starting to bring some of these CDs in, eh? Have a few of them there, eh?
Friend: Actually the store was full of them, like they were all they were selling.
SLS: Yeah? No sh**, eh?
Friend: Yeah. So I bought some of their "CDs" now listen to this...
*Yellow starts*
SLS: Sounds good... this is pretty... Hey... This is that other f***ing song I wrote.
Friend: I know, right... These guys have been ripping your stuff off, hey...
SLS: Well, that's how its starting to seem...

It was more than similar sounding--I remember a mix that was out there..

I am not a Coldplay fan or anything but all these people claiming Coldplay ripped them off is hilarious you can almost see the money grabbing dollar signs in their eyes.

I doubt Coldplay sit in a studio and say "hey lets rip off music from people and make millions of dollars because its not like anyone will find out when are middle of the road stuff is played on every mainstream radio across the planet".

Their music is really generic and simple its not surprising other people all over the world are gonna come up with the same sound. Seriously every 1 in 3 musicians could probably sue another artist for having similar music.

If Coldplay ripped off anyone its Travis, Elbow, Radiohead and people like that.

I like both "Viva La Vida" and Joe Satriani's "If I Could Fly." Coldplay clearly stole that **** though.
