Comic Book Purchases and Thoughts for March 19th

But... why? Why not just ditch Earth--which has to have one of the highest ratios of super-powered beings per capita of any planet ever--for some quieter, more easily subjugated world? Why risk literally the last remnants of your race trying to take over a planet that's fought tenaciously and won against not only you, but several other alien empires simultaneously before? Talk about biting off more than they can chew.

Well, they were already there.....no time to set up super powered sleeper cells on some other planet I guess.

I'm not talking about sleeper cells, I'm talking about finding a new homeworld and not letting their race get scattered in the wind. Come to think of it, I wonder just how many Skrulls are left. Since they had a pretty large empire spread across a large part of the galaxy, they must've had many billions or even trillions of people. "Close to extinct" could mean they've still got dozens of millions of people still spread out in outlying colonies and stuff. Maybe they're not as close to extinction as I've been thinking.

Justice League of America #19
So what...what exactly in the name of Buffy was the point of all this?

"The JLA is here to fix things!...oops, wrong place. Oh well, time to go home."

I mean...things happen, technically, and then...and then it's all pointless. 'Caaaauuuse hey, they tried, right? Not their problem anymore.

Man alive.

(5 out of 10 for the issue)
(3.5 out of 10 for the entire arc)

JLA is the most lifeless book on the shelves - DC have really managed to kill the book.

I'm enjoying "Brand New Day", but it's kind of like reading your little niece a great children's story knowing it's written by Elizabeth Bathory. Sure it's nice and fun to read, but you realize she was probably beating a woman to death while writing it.

Yet, it is the best selling ongoing they have, the only title that consistently sells over 70k, that isn't an ALL-STAR book that ships inconsistently. Weird.

Yeah, the near-extinction of the Skrull race makes me wonder what the hell the purpose of continuing to obsess over our backwater planet is...

Don't the Skrulls have some kind of holy reverence for Earth?

From the way Giffen wrote Annihilation, Skrulls have gone through some kind of Diaspora where they aren't seen anymore. The galaxy's a big place with huge nooks and crannies they can retreat to lick their wounds but I think they'd have wanted a piece of Annihilus when the United Front was formed. Apparently there wasn't enough of them to form a standing army which is why the Kree had to field the most troops.

In Earthly terms, an endangered species numbers between hundreds to thousands but in galactic terms, thats up in the air really. Still, I'd rather have them going up against Ravenous and his drones since the entirety of Skrull space is in his hands.

I dunno...maybe...just maybe...this has something to do with the supposed last Emperor of the Skrulls: Hulkling.

I know that the Clone Saga was Marvel's last attempt to "unmarry" Spider-Man, and it was a debacle that in some ways still has consequences. It is the measuring stick to which almost every terribly franchise reboot is compared to. It took countless years for sales to recover.

The problem with the anti-marriage people is they make the same mistake as DC has been doing for ages; bending over backwards to appease the fans of the Silver Age while backstabbing the fans of the Bronze/Modern age. That backfired horribly for DC recently and it only may be a matter of time before it backfires on Marvel.

The problem was, so many people hated the marriage that even many writers didn't give it a chance, didn't explore it with innovation; instead they focused on the stress, the tension, the in-fighting. MJ married a superhero, and they had the most boring marriage ever. I've seen middle aged women marry bikers and have more fun with it.

There has to be a point where a character matures a bit, and grows up. Spider-Man being Archie Andrews forever is limiting, and at least Archie never fools his fans with "events" teasing changes that are undone. At least those comics are honest about their status quo.

There also has to be a point where...well, how long do comic characters need to court before the company will allow them to do what is natural? Lois & Clark had to wait over 50 years, and that only happened because of a TV show (in fact the writers were told to wait until the TV show lasted a few seasons, and needing to fill space in a way spawned the DEATH OF SUPERMAN storyline).

If Marvel wanted Peter & MJ split, they should have realized the roots of the character are in reality, and had them divorce. Over 50% of American couples do. It would have been emotional, real, controversial and fresh. Instead, they went for a standard melodramatic comic piece of baloney. It was so...DC.

I did not like OMD for a second... at times, the art was nice, but the story was pure garbage, in my opinion.

Having said that, all I wanted to point out to all the anti-BND/JQ haters was that this was not a JQ agenda, but one that Marvel has wanted for at least 15 years... and it got to the point that they didn't want to drag it out any longer.

The way they went about it was very DC... and it was embarrasing to read... but the bottom line is they are now in a position that they wanted, and they are going to pelt us with good creative teams to keep the sales at least on par with what they had, and as time goes on, and the complainers die off, and new generations of Spidey readers emerge, they will be able to read "classic" Spidey like many of us did as Spidey readers of the 60's & 70's & 80's... myself commencing in 1975, being a fan thanks largely in part to the 67' cartoon that was always played on one of the local tv stations in syndication throughout the 70's and early 80's.

I don't think we're going to be seeing the start of the "generic" Spider-Man/Archie wanna-be where nothing happens nor evolves... the books (thus far) have a nice retro feel, but yet still maintain (in my opinion) a good modern feel... I do believe that we will see growth in the character, just not in an aging manner...

Then again, this is all my opinion on the matter as well.

And for the record, I believe Marvel's last attempt to seperate Peter & MJ was when they led us to believe that MJ was killed in ASM #454, only to have her return in ASM #470 when nobody believed that she was actually dead.

:yay:

I read "Aftersmash: Warbound" number whichever, and yeah, definitely didn't see the apparently Warbound romances coming. Seriously,
Korg and Hiroim
? Did some lonely 15 year old goth girl threaten Pak's family or something?

By the way, "Immortal Iron Fist" #13 was awesome, but you knew that already. Loved the last panel. I'm just wondering how long it'll take before the inevitable moment where
Davos comes around and helps the other immortal weapons
.

Korg...and Hiroim...in a relationship? How the heck would that work out in the sack?

No...forget that. Best not asking.

They clasp hands in a volcano and thus make rock babies.

No, seriously, they do.

It's the sexiest thing ever.

No, seriously, it is.

has there been any comment on how many Skrull sleeper cells there could be?

either way, if the infiltration started pre-Annihilation, then it would be hard to explain the loss of major heroes in the Marvel Universe if the Skrulls pulled out to lick their wounds.

if there aren't any sleeper cells, then the Skrulls pull out and what...put back the time-disoriented heroes? with the empire crumbling, they couldn't really leave anyone behind on Earth.

if there are sleeper cells, then they would have to be evacuated. how would that be done without anyone noticing? that would still eave the missing persons problem.

:pal: hahah that was good.....its been a while since i have seen u around these parts

I don't know, do they? I've never heard of it.

That's a good point. I hadn'tt thought of that. But the fact that the Runaways and Young Avengers have their own little side mini rather than being featured prominently in the main event mini makes me think that Hulkling's involvement will be minimal. That means the Skrulls would have their sights set on Earth for a different reason than just retrieving Hulkling.

**** you guys, it was sweet. Pak's built a nice bond between Korg and Hiroim. :o

i truly know nothing about the skrulls...is this "event" really gonna be worth getting in to. should i be trying to get involved and if so what comics should i be getting in order to follow the story.

Just pick up Secret Invasion Saga. It's actually a very comprehensive history of the Skrulls/backstory to Secret Invasion. And it's free.

That's...one way of putting it!

Except that isn't Hiorim having a thing with that SHIELD agent as well? Kate something, I dunno, I haven't been reading too closely.

If so, that bich can just step off:cmad:, 'cause this sht is just too hot.

HA!!! GET IT?? "Hot"?

It also rocks.

HAHA!!

It rocks too hard.

Last week I finally broke down and ordered Oni Press' The Damned, which I'd been thinking about getting fo a while now. Several positive comments about it on the Hype and it was in my hands by Saturday.

Anyway, yeah, it's pretty awesome. Both the story and the art compliment each other tremendously. I remember Hurtt's art from his Queen & Country arc, but I don't remember him fleshing it out so much with the beautiful gray tones that he uses here. He's like a cleaned up Guy Davis. The story itself ridiculously entertaining. It's nothing really new, but it feels fresh in that it nails everything perfectly. The dialogue is flawlessly ripped from an old mobster/gumshoe movie. The plot is derivative, but it's handled very well. Obviously what makes the story here are the weird and interesting characters. The Worm in particular is uber creepy. I actually hadn't planned on reading it all last night, but when I started, I couldn't put it down.

I'm really looking forward to the follow up.

Yay for The Damned. :D  :D

Hiroim doesn't have a "thing" with Waynesboro. He's trying to educate her about the Warbound so she doesn't dog them like Ross dogs the Hulk. I haven't noticed any romantic overtures between them. Moments of understanding, sure, but you don't need to be attracted to someone for that.

And those rock babies are cute, with their just-spewed-forth-from-the-furnaces-of-Hell eyes. :)

She was getting pretty close to him, lips-wise, in issue three. I suppose I could have read it wrong, but I don't really know if there is any other way to read people almost brushing lips.

I don't remember that part. Anyway, Kate Waynesboro's just some silly human trollop. Korg is where Hiroim's heart lies. :o

Bah, that just means she has a crush on him, not that he returns her attraction.
