Coming off a shotgun-wielding turn in Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows," Michelle Pfeiffer is in negotiations to play another tough mother in Luc Besson's darkly comedic actioner "Malavita," which stars Robert De Niro.

Pic is the first in a new co-production and co-financing deal between Relativity Media and Besson's EuropaCorp.

Based on Tonino Benacquista's book "Badfellas," story follows a notorious mafia family relocated to France under the witness protection program. While they do their best to fit in, old habits die hard and they soon find themselves handling things the "family" way. Pfeiffer will play De Niro's wife who has a penchant for arson when crossed.

Besson adapted the script and he'll also produce the pic, which starts production in August in advance of a 2013 bow. Relativity will release the film stateside, while EuropaCorp will distribute in France and handle international sales.

Other pic in the Relativity-EuropaCorp deal is actioner "Three Days to Kill," written by Besson and Adi Hasak.

Pfeiffer and De Niro previously shared the screen in Matthew Vaughn's "Stardust" and Garry Marshall's "New Year's Eve." A three-time Oscar nominee, Pfeiffer will next be seen in DreamWorks' drama "People Like Us," which opens June 29.

Don't know how I feel about this for Michelle... but lets face it, it's a step up for both of them from 'New Year's Eve'. Plus it'll be nice for them to both actually WORK together in their third movie.

Tommy Lee Jones joins the cast ''stern handler in the FBI-sponsored program'' for DeNiro.

Tommy Lee Jones is preparing to move from one secretive agency to another, as the "Men in Black 3" star is in final negotiations to play an FBI agent in Luc Besson's darkly comedic actioner "Malavita," which will be released Stateside by Relativity Media.

Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star as a married couple with Mafia ties who relocate to France under the witness protection program. While they do their best to fit in, old habits die hard and they soon find themselves handling things the "family" way.

Jones is making a deal to play De Niro's stern handler in the FBI-sponsored program, who checks in on the family and tries to help them assimilate to their new life overseas.

Based on Tonino Benacquista's book "Badfellas," pic is the first in a recent co-production and co-financing deal between Relativity Media and Besson's EuropaCorp. Besson adapted the script with Michael Caleo ("The Sopranos"), and he'll also produce the pic, which starts production in August in advance of a 2013 bow.

Jones, who is coming off back-to-back blockbusters "Captain America" and "Men in Black 3," next stars opposite Meryl Streep in Sony's martial dramedy "Hope Springs." Thesp also co-stars in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" and Peter Webber's Japan-set drama "Emperor." Additionally, Jones is set to write, direct, produce and topline the indie period pic "The Homesman," which EuropaCorp is considering producing, financing and distributing internationally.

Jones is repped by CAA and attorneys William Jacobson and Dale de la Torre of Jacobson, Russell, Saltz & Fingerman.

Scorsese to exec produce Luc Besson's 'Malavita'

Martin Scorsese and Luc Besson are collaborating on "Malavita," from EuropaCorp and Relativity, starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones. Besson helms the actioner.
Scorsese, who has been a creative consultant to the pic in pre-production and during lensing, is now joining the picture as executive producer and will work with Besson throughout post-production and editing.
Peppered with black comedy, "Malavita" was adapted by Besson from Tonino Benacquista's novel "Badfellas."
It stars De Niro as a retired mob boss who moves to a small town in France's Normandy with his wife (Pfeiffer) and teenage daughter (Dianna Agron), as part of the witness protection program, but he gets caught up in old habits.

John D'Leo, Dominic Chianese and Domenick Lombardozzi also star.

The involvement of Scorsese, whose organized crime classics "Goodfellas" and "Casino" starred De Niro, promises to give "Malavita" a label of authenticity in its depiction of the Italian-American mob world.
Pic is Besson's directorial comeback to the action-thriller genre. The French helmer broke on to the international scene in the 1990s with dark-edged thrillers such as Jean-Reno starrer "The Professional" and "Nikita" with Anne Parillaud.
"Malavita" is produced by EuropaCorp's Virginie Besson-Silla ("From Paris With Love") and Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh. The studio's Tucker Tooley will executive produce along with Scorsese, who was represented by WME in his deal.
Relativity Media will release the pic in the U.S. on Oct. 18, EuropaCorp will distribute it in France on Oct. 23.

"Malavita" is the first film under three-picture pact Relativity and EuropaCorp inked in May. It will be followed by Kevin Costner starrer "Three Days to Kill," which is now shooting in Paris and at Besson's studio complex La Cite du Cinema.

Sounds fun. I would check this one out. Also this reminds me, I should watch Goodfellas again. It's been years.

Oh lord... wish someone would correct the title of this thread.

Scorsese and Besson collaborating creatively on a crime film? Too much awesome.

ohhhhhhh hollywood. from Malativa to The Family.

Yeah, that's goofy, doesn't matter, the film should deliver in spades.

I wish they stuck with Malativa. :csad:

Holy crap, this looks AWESOME! :wow:
Sky-rocketed to my must-see of 2013.

And Michelle Pfeiffer is looking hotter than she ever has. Damn. :hrt:

wow the bit where the daughter gave that brutal beat down on that kid with the racket woah.

I was hoping for something less comedic , but this works.

Peanut buttah. lol!!! Looks awesome!!!

I read the book. Really funny and action packed. It's not a straight up comedy. It's part black comedy I'd say. Really violent. The dog is Malavita. I loved Besson saying that even the dog is a bad ass. Michelle Pfeiffer is setting everyone ablaze. I'm not going to spoiler the entire thing though.

This is Besson's first time directing, writing, and producing in I think a decade. Getting Martin Scorsese on board is just insane!

I hope this does really well. The trailer will definitely grab audiences. I just hope the trailer gets a wide release like the film.

There's a sequel to the novel btw.

fantastic combination of drama and comedy.

badass female characters in a Luc Besssson movie. no suprise.
