THE TWELVE: SPEARHEAD #1

And that's it. And I had to stretch to even get that. That'll be two very slow weeks. Granted, this is a month with 5 Wednesdays, but it still means some weeks will be clogged, when everything comes out.

Gasp, it may also mean that the next issue of SIEGE needs more than 4-5 weeks to ship. But I thought Oliver Coipel was speedy!

At any rate, this one shot is weird. It's written and drawn by the artist who drew THE TWELVE issues 1-8, which was a maxi series that JMS wrote, was somewhat promoted and which he has since abandoned. You would think if Marvel wanted Weston to write and draw any issues of TWELVE material, they'd ask him to finish "THE TWELVE" proper. Lord knows the end of any Handbook Bio featuring any members of the Twelve, like Rockman from last week's handbook, always ends in a murky way because that story never finished, and frankly probably never will finish. Instead, they have Weston write and draw an issue that is basically a prelude to a story that WILL NEVER FINISH instead of even TRYING to finish it! I mean, why not just have Giffen write the last few issues of that, much like he had to mop up on THOR after JMS? He did a good job on Thor, why not make it a double? It isn't like he'll be busy with issues of SWORD. I mean, Mark Millar started out as Grant Morrison's funny sidekick/ghost writer, why not amp up Giffen as "the man who cleans up after JMS' messes, and does it well"?

What the hell are you talking about???

Issue #9 has been promoted sometime in the spring of 2010, and in March, according to an interview with JMS in February (two weeks ago), Tom Brevoort has a happy announcement concerning the Twelve, which would indicate that's it's going to finish...

... while it may be premature to say that, it's certainly no less ignorant to make the claim that it will NEVER FINISH!!!

Sheesh...

Uggg...my comics are starting to pile up! I finally decided to tackle Stephen King's new book; and, while I'm nearing the halfway point, it still will take me another good week or two to finish.

Hmm, hadn't heard about that. Either way, I'm personally done with The Twelve. 'Monthly' comics have a statute of limitations for me. I stopped caring about The Twelve a long time ago, so I won't be buying whatever issues JMS deigns to bestow upon us in the coming months. I mean, it was a decent series, but it was no Planetary; I don't get that spark of excitement whenever a new issue comes up, even if the last issue was months or years ago.

Yikes. Another tiny week.

For the record, issue #9 is almost 18 months late, and counting. Frankly, and I don't think I am unjustified, I don't believe JMS or Tom B about anything until I not only see Diamond solicit an issue, but I actually see it on the stands.

I did enjoy the series and will finish it out...unless Marvel decides to make each issue $3.99, even though it began as $2.99, before Marvel got the wise idea to make all mini series cost $4 during the worst recession since Ronald Reagan was sworn into office.

In some matters I will take Marvel at their word, and in others, it is full of dooky. In this matter, it's full of dooky. TWELVE #9 has been promised to fans last year, too. Obviously JMS didn't give as much of a spit about this than his scripts for a series of vital sales importance, BRAVE AND THE BOLD (which, I think I can say, is literally outsold by ARCHIE these days).

No, this isn't as bad as the farce that was ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VS. HULK, but it's still not Marvel's happiest hour. And you'll notice no one, under penalty of death, dares mention DAREDEVIL: TARGET #2. I mean, Kevin Smith only feels like finishing scripts for DC these days; if I was Joe Q, I'd be miffed. But he isn't. I bet if Kevin Smith wanted to write a comic for Marvel tomorrow, he'd get a check, regardless if he ever finished. And that is why fiasco's like THE TWELVE #9 continue to come up. I think Joe Q.'s beginnings as an artist and creator for hire have made him too lenient and forgiving about missed deadlines. And that's a problem. It's been a problem for years.

Regarding those maybes... it's possible, but most likely not. And this is the last issue of Sword. It's sad really, as Beast art not withstanding, it's been a pretty good little book. Curious to see how it ends. And this is sorta the last issue of Cable and at that I say hallelujah. This whole thing was dragged out WAY too much. It could have been told in maybe 12 issues or less... stretching that to 24 was just stupid. After this it becomes Deadpool & Cable (I don't know if it's ongoing or for an issue or two, but I'm done with it either way so I don't care). And lastly, Batman & Robin, which is the jewel of the bunch. Still, it's not as great as other books I read. All in all, a pretty mediocre to crappy week. I'm considering skipping it and waiting until the following week to pick these up.
