I never seen the movie during its theatrical release. In fact I actually watched for the first time just a few weeks ago. Yes it was a bit on the campy side, but it was much better than I thought it would be. I would even say it is a bit under rated. The movie is nearly 20 years old, so of course the special effects look dated. I know I may get attacked for the following statement, but it made me realized Sin City was not as groundbreaking as I first thought. Good movie, but certainly not the first to look like comic panels brought to life.
