So I got the trial to specifically watch this. 4 episodes into the 10 episode first season and I have not been disappointed. This basically Steinfeld in her Edge of Seventeen mode, by the way of Coppola's Marie Antoinette and it's great. I am a sucker for period pieces with modern energy, and that is exactly what this one has here.
I love that Emily has good intentions, but like all fun young protagonist, doesn't necessarily go about it the right way. She's an adorable slacker of sorts, having a midlife crisis in her teens. Her relationship with her friends and family all have adorable complexity that puts a smile on my face. Another big plus is the show is surprisingly pretty. Very vibrant, with excellent color grading.
I was surprised to find out each episode is more or less 30 mins. I expected an hour, but the length is perfect imo. The show never overstays its welcome and leaves you wanting more. Also you haven't lived until you have seen John Mulaney as Henry David Thoreau.
There is only one issue for me, and that is the majority of the music. They turn it up loud and it just shouts at you a lot of the time. It doesn't have the elegance of the film it echoes in that regard. There are moments of beauty in the score, and it makes me wish they had stuck to a more original score throughout. Even still, I am kind of in love with this show already. Plus, it's already been renewed for a second season, so happy dance!
