This is similar to the "Actors that annoy you that other people like/suggest" thread except for directors. It seems that no matter what the project, there is a very short list of directors names that come up to be thrown around as suggestions. The problem is, its actually very much the same among the studios. There are a lot of talented directors, that while they haven't solidified themselves as "great" can make very good films but you'll never hear their names thrown around.

Also, as the title suggest, lets get this out of the way: Christopher Nolan is a very talented director but he is a very distinct talent and not the best fit for a lot of properties and genres.

Talk among yourselves.

I'll just add this guy

Abrams is able to put together very enjoyable and successful movies but I really dislike seeing him (and his gaggle of writing buddies) attached to or suggested for everything under the sun.

I think Abrams is able to put together really thrilling moments, but quite often they aren't really earned by the story or really hang together. (You don't get to have an E.T. emotional exit for a rampaging monster, the Contextless Wrath of Khan reversal)

All that said, with the writers Disney has hired, I think he will do a fantastic job with Star Wars.

I think you pretty much nailed it with Christopher Nolan. He's not annoying at all, I enjoy a good chunk of his films, but his name certainly gets thrown out there for every new or potential project under the sun. I'd also add Joss Whedon, though probably to a lesser extent.

Tim Burton, QT and Kevin Smith. Good at their thing but keep them in their place.

Lets me just get this out of the way and agree that Nolan's name is mentioned too much. I can't think of one director whose name gets mentioned as much as his even when he just completely doesn't fit a project. Like when someone mentioned his name in relation to Star Wars, his movies are overly serious and not fun how is he not wrong for the pulpy Star Wars franchise?

I think Nolan is great but his extreme fans are annoying and quite delusional on which kind of films he actually makes.

I like Chris Nolan's non Batman movies(Inception, Insomnia, etc) . What I don't like about him is that it seems everyone at Warner Bros & DC see him as some sort of savior for all potential DC movies or properties.

Even though I haven't seen MI3 or Super 8 yet, I love his work on Star Trek and can't wait to see what he does with Star Wars. Well anyways, he seems like a chill guy.

No doubt he's made a lot of great movies in the past, but he hasn't done anything great since the turn of the century and grows more irrelevant with each passing year. I don't enjoy saying it, but Spielberg's lost it.

One thing that really baffles me is the trust WB puts in Zach Snyder. He's made them some money but he has also lost him money and his movies never garner much critical appeal.

But damn did he ever have a good turn of the century. It is ridiculous that anyone could put out Minority Report, AI and Catch Me If You Can in the course of a year and a half.

I thought his Lincoln film was quite good. He knew well enough to keep a pretty light touch with that one rather than throwing in every trick and emotional maneuver he knows like he did with War Horse, which despite being overwrought I don't think is bad.

Portraying Spielberg as some waning talent when he was nominated for best director back to back, with his one animated film also nominated (it's not like they owe him one or something) is a bit odd.

Really I don't think he's lost any talent, but rather a desire for certain kinds of projects.

It gets old when people suggest Neil Blomkamp for things, not because he wouldn't be good for a number of things but because he himself has made it perfectly clear that he has no interest in doing pretty much anything but his own work, which makes him a distinct and important talent in my book.

Christopher Nolan without a doubt, one of my favorite directors, but i hate how his name allways comes up as a suggestion, even when he doesn't fit the project peopl are proposing him for.

Wow I couldn't disagree with this any more. Spielberg has been phenomenal and he shows no signs of slowly down.

I'd have to say James Cameron for sure. He hasn't made a good movie since T2

I think Spielberg is one of those directors that tries to put his foot in every single genre he can and I find that admirable. That being said, he is not going to be a master of every genre, but none of his films (that I have seen) have been bad. Disappointing? knowing that he is one of the most talented directors in cinematic history? Sure...but bad no. And I wouldn't be surprised if he gives us one or two more films that blow our socks off before he bows down.

David O. Russell
Who is suggesting him for everything? I honestly can not recall seeing him suggested for any of these genre properties.

And I don't see how someone can bring up Snyder in this thread, he hasn't been suggested for much since 300.

I just realized what the full title of the thread is. Well anyways, he annoys me.

Pretty much this yeah, although i didnt like Insomnia much.

There was a time when his name was thrown around for a bunch of video game adaptations, for whatever reason.

Guillermo Del Toro. I love him and basically all his work but something about his movies (all besides Pan's Labirynth) just don't seem as amazing as most people make them out to be. Pan's was absolutely breathtaking but that's the only film of his I can truly say that about yet it seems like he's held in MUCH higher regard than that. Hellboy was great, personally I was never big on Blade 2 and Hellboy 2 was too comical but great visually. Haven't seen Pacific Rim yet but it seems like more of them same basically. Except now he has a hard on for actors on F/X shows
