The American Society of Cinematographers will present producer-director Christopher Nolan with its Board of Governors Award at the 23rd annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards on Feb. 15 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City.

The award is presented annually "to an individual who has made significant contributions to advancing the art of filmmaking."

In addition to his critical and commercial hit "The Dark Knight," Nolan has directed "Memento," "Insomnia," "Batman Begins" and "The Prestige."

"Chris Nolan is infused with talent with which he masterfully uses to collaboratively create memorable motion pictures," ASC president Daryn Okada said. "His quest for superlative images to tell stories has earned the admiration of our members."

Wally Pfister, who has served as cinematographer on all of Nolan's films from "Memento" on, added, "Chris is an amazingly talented and collaborative director who brings out the best in everyone around him."

Recipients of the award include Gregory Peck, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Robert Wise, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Altman, Warren Beatty, Stanley Donen, Norman Jewison, Irwin Winkler, Sydney Pollack, Ron Howard, and Annette Bening, among others.

More posts dammit! The man behind the knight.

Congrats to Nolan!

Congratulations, Chris.

Well deserved!

Congratulations Christopher Nolan
You deserve it.

I think where the credit is due more than anything is the IMAX aspect. No one really tried to do what they did here with IMAX cameras and technology.

And the other thing is, in times like this, it got people to go back into theatres. People went to see this movie just for the IMAX experience. Never has a movie been so successful on IMAX before.

Now all the rage is like 3D IMAX or stretching the film to IMAX size. But this movie actually shot like two reels worth with IMAX cameras. No feature length narrative movie has done this before. Spielberg and Lucas certainly haven't. James Cameron hasn't. Scorcese hasn't. Chris Nolan and Pfister did though.

didnt scorsese do it with 'shine a light'? i may be wrong on that, not sure.

either way...yay? good for nolan. though, i think his only advancements of film would include imax technology and the storytelling in memento. none of his other films have really "advanced" film. but maybe thats all you need for the award, i dunno.

It's well deserved.
