Dirty Dancing Sequel in the Works

With this and John Wick 4 and 5, Lionsgate must need the money.

I like Dirty Dancing but a sequel is not needed, especially without Patrick Swayze

Yeah, no offence to Jennifer Grey, but without Swayze it doesn’t really mean much to do this. Their reunion was what would’ve sold it.

I never saw the other “sequel”, but didn’t Swayze cameo? Was he playing the same character?

‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel: Details About Music, Casting, Director – Deadline

In the sequel, Jennifer Grey will reprise her iconic role of Frances “Baby” Houseman as she returns to Kellerman’s in the 1990s. Like the original, the sequel will be a coming-of-age romance centered on the experience of a young woman at the summer camp, but Baby’s own journey will intertwine with this to create a multi-layered narrative.

Levine has co-written the sequel, also titled Dirty Dancing, with Elizabeth Chomko. Casting conversations are underway — the team has a shortlist of names to play the lead — and the film is expected to go into production later this year for release in 2024.

Jennifer Grey may not be the only face from the original to return, Levine told us. “We are about to talk to people and are exploring that,” the 50/50director said.

Baby is now a dance instructor asked to come back and help teach a group of kids how to dance including the son of her ex lover.

You know what? This could be good. Maybe I'm being optimistic after Top Gun 2 and the Westside Story remake but I think there is potential.

Obviously Swayze not being here is a big loss. But maybe if the film addresses that like having Jennifer Grey's character returning to the resort on the 15th year anniversary of Swayze's character's death (2024 would actually mark the real life 15th year anniversary). Grey could run into a young boy or girl and help them with their love interest.

And Jonathan Levine is a pretty good director. The Wackness was really good. So was 50/50. And Warm Bodies was way better than it had any right to be. The Night Before was ok. ANd I heard The Long Shot was good.

Having 4 credited writers doesn't inspire confidence. But we'll see. Will need to hear more story details.

On another note, I realize I've never seen the original. Will have to watch this summer...and that's part of the reason why they do these remakes and sequels

Also happy to see Judy Blume get another adaptation. I used to love her work as a kid
