Lionsgate has won a major bidding war to finance and distribute the sci-fi action thriller “Kin” in a deal said to be worth nearly $30 million.
The story revolves around a recently released ex-con (Jack Reynor) and his adopted younger brother who are forced to go on the run. Chased by a vengeful criminal (James Franco), the feds and a cadre of otherworldly soldiers, their only protection is a found weapon of mysterious ancestry.
Dennis Quaid will play the father of the siblings, and Zoe Kravitz is a young woman who joins them on the run. The film is financed by No Trace Camping (“Room”) with pre-production underway in Toronto ahead of an October 24th start.
Jonathan and Josh Baker are directing the feature based on their short film “Bag Man” with Daniel Casey penning the script adaptation. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, Jeff Arkuss, David Gross and Jesse Shapira will produce.

Carrie Coon has been added to the cast of the Jonathan and Josh Baker-directed sci-fi thriller Kin, joining topliners Jack Reynor, James Franco, Zoe Kravitz and Dennis Quaid. The film centers on an ex-con and his younger brother who are forced to run from a vengeful criminal, the feds, and a cadre of otherworldly soldiers. Their only protection is a weapon of mysterious ancestry. Coon will play an FBI agent who is called upon to investigate the strange occurrences that seem to follow the two boys across the West Coast. Lionsgate acquired this title in a pre-buy deal during the Toronto Film Festival this year. Daniel Casey wrote the script, and 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen are producing with Jeff Arkuss, David Gross and Jesse Shapira. Coon’s credits include David Fincher’s Gone Girl , HBO’s The Leftovers and will star in FX’s third season of Fargo. She is repped by UTA and Sanders.Armstrong.Caserta Management.

My review

A pretty good little scifi flick that deserves to be seen. For the most part it's a decent family drama with scifi elements... And some elements from young adult novels to create what would be a nice fresh start to a franchise. It's heavily inspired by Terminator 2 and also other 80s scifi flicks like The Last Starfighter and Flight of the Navigator. What I love most about the movie is the direction and cinematography. It's got vaporwave vibes. I thought the cast did a good job, even if the script calls for them to do dumb mistakes to advance the story. There'a also a couple of big cameos that show up and once they do, the movie takes on a different life and tone. Overall, it's not a perfect movie, but there's a lot to admire about it. It probably wont happen, but I would love to see the sequel to it.
8.5/10

I'm assuming the bidding war for this was because they thought it would spawn a Terminator style franchise. Two notable actors pop up in the last ten minutes of the movie to practically say I'll you next movie to the lead kid actor.

I would love to see it happen.
