Are you familiar with the Discworld series?

What do you think about the books, are they any good? How well do they stand up to other work by Pratchett, like Johnny Maxwell?
In what order should the books be read? A guy I used to know was a big fan who praised Pratchett, and he claimed the reading order doesn't matter.

I love the books. Most of the stories are self contained so reading order really doesn't matter. Though I would suggest starting with 'The Colour of Magic' I personally go for published order.

I've never read any of his other works so I don't know how well it holds up to his other material.

There are several different storyline "streams" that Pratchett uses in his long-running series. There is the Witches stream, the Watch stream, the Rincewind stream, the Moist stream (I call it the Infrastructure stream :woot:) and others. While the books don't need to be read in the right order, each stream should be read in the right order.

I wonder if some Discworld book's gonna get a live action treatment someday.

I love the Death books as he's an amazing character. I'd recommend reading Mort but any of the books are lots of fun. The first few novels are odd when compared to later ones but he carries the continuity very well after the first couple.

Unfortunately, I wasn't :(

They're not bad, although they kind of follow the books too closely, IMO.

I think some of them you can actually see full length on youtube. I was able to purchase Hogfather on DVD as well.

Kind of cool to see Charles Dance use the role of Havelock Vetinari as a warm-up to playing Tywin Lannister. You'd almost forget they are different characters!
