I wasn't a big fan of the original, but it's irritating that Disney picked this film, out of all their live-action catalogue titles, to remake. At least this won't be a musical.

What's next, a remake of The Apple Dumpling Gang? No Deposit No Return? I'm sure people are chomping at the bit for a remake of Never Cry Wolf either...

I’d be more interested if it was still a musical...

The only thing I remember about the movie was that Mickey Rooney was in it.....I think.

I saw it a few years ago, and for the life of me can't remember the songs. Now if this remake got some new songs penned by the Lopez husband-wife duo... whole different story.

I watched the original a ridiculous amount of times as a kid so this remake has me intrigued.

I haven’t seen it in more than 20 years, and I remember the songs better than I remember the movie. I even learned to play “Candle on the Water” on the guitar a few years ago.

The only thing I know about it is that it's where 'Candle on the Water' came from.

Not seeing a whole lot of demand for this, but oh well.

Ha, gosh The Apple Dumpling Gang…that takes me back. Maybe Pollyanna next?:woot:

Pete's Dragon could actually be pretty cool nowadays.

I fail to see the point in this, especially if it's not a musical anymore.

Isn't remaking a movie like this better than doing a classic though? I mean it's trying something different with a film that maybe had potential. I'd like to see a Black Cauldron remake personally.

That's my thought as well.

Was the original one looked upon as a classic, or just schlock?

I agree with this so much. Especially on a remake of "The Black Cauldron". I'd love it so much.

I know that Black Cauldron has a following but is IT a good flick?

It had some good things in it but I wouldn't call it good. I just think it could be something cool if it was given another shot.

People who grew up with it remember it somewhat fondly. But it hasn't aged well at all and didn't do well at the time. Remember, we're talking about Disney in the 70s after Walt's death. Their live-action output (and their animated output) was pretty pitiful at that time compared to what Disney was putting out when he was alive.

It's no Mary Poppins or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea let's just put it that way.

I doubt Elliot will be a cartoon, but he'll be rendered as a CG character but kind of cute at the same time.

Gawd I loved Candle on the Water as a kid, such a good song. I too watched this movie like crazy as a kid.

Well one of the problems is that it was based on a book series where the protagonist goes through a character arc. Whereas Disney during that era was in "no sequel" mode. If they remake TBC, then I'd like to see them do a series of films based on the books.

“Hunger Games” actor Wes Bentley has signed on to star in Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

As TheWrap was the first to report, “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” director David Lowery is directing the film he was first hired to co-write.

Robert Redford and Bryce Dallas Howard also have roles in the new film.

The original 1977 film featured an animated dragon interacting with a live-action cast including Mickey Rooney, Shelley Winters, Red Buttons and Sean Marshall, who played an orphan fleeing his abusive adoptive parents.

Lowery and Toby Halbrooks wrote the script, which reinvents the core of the original family film, which is not expected to be a musical this time around. The story follows a young boy, Pete (Oakes Fegley), whose parents are dead. He is subsequently raised by the titular dragon in a forest.

Bentley, who played gamemaker Seneca Crane in the first “Hunger Games” movie, most recently had roles in “Interstellar” and on “American Horror Story: Freak Show.” He’ll next be seen in Terrence Malick‘s “Knight of Cups” and Zac Efron DJ movie “We Are Your Friends.”

He is represented by WME and Untitled Entertainment.

Some of the animation is stunning, it has its charms but it's not a classic by any means. Disney treated it like a redheaded stepchild when it underperformed back in 1985, and it's one of the few Disney animated films where Disney didn't update the opening logos when it hit home video.
