I think it might have been vaguely hinted at in NOES 6 during the flashbacks to before he got burned but Freddy vs. Jason leaned into it more, which I think makes it canon.

And on the subject of Freddy, yeah it absolutely was leaned into more in Freddy Vs Jason, but hey, a crazy white man luring kids to his home? My Spidey Senses always told me he was a Chester.

In the remake, they try to frame it as Freddy being wrongfully accused of being a pedophile and that's why he kills... Then they **** the bed and say jk he's totally a pedophile.

Story flaws aside, one major issue I have with the Elm Street remake is the notion they had that making Freddy look like a legit burn victim was a cool design choice.
