I thought Mayweather would win, because objectively he's a better boxer than Manny at this time (10 years ago might have been a different story). But I think people wanted Manny to win (since Mayweather is an undeniable a-hole) and that emotion colored their judgement. So I disagree that it's because they never saw Mayweather fight. They probably have seen enough of him in and out of the ring to know he's one of boxing's biggest jerks, and just hoped against hope to see Mayweather finally get his ass beaten as most boxing fans do.
