Deadline New York says Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity) is in talks to direct Gambit, a Joel and Ethan Coen-scripted remake of the 1966 British caper comedy which starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine.

The original takes off in Hong Kong where a dapper English cat burglar (Caine) enlists the aid of a Eurasian dancer (MacLaine), to help him in an elaborate scheme to grab an age-old artifact from the heavily secured palace of a powerful Middle Eastern tycoon. Unfortunately, the foolproof scheme begins to backfire shortly after it starts and the duo must pull out all the stops if they hope to come out on top.

Liman's next project is Fair Game starring Naomi Watts as CIA agent Valerie Plame.

No I'm more awaiting OMG it's a remake! Remakes suck, Hollywood is thoughtless yet again!

If it's written by the Coen Brothers, chances are that the movie is going to be pretty good.

darn. I thought is was Gambit from the X-men!

Cameron Diaz Takes Michael Hoffman's Gambit

Cameron Diaz has signed on for Gambit, the remake of the 1966 crime caper, reports Deadline.

The new version is set to arrive from director Michael Hoffman (The Last Station) and with a script from Joel and Ethan Coen. Slated to star Colin Firth as a English cat burglar (played by Michael Caine in the original), Gambit focuses on a heist that targets a billionaire's priceless statue.

Diaz is said to play a woman that Firth's character hires to help him in the con game. In the original, the role was that of a Eurasian dancer played by Shirley MacLaine, but the new version of the character is said to be a "Texas steer roper."

Though no start date is locked, the plan remains to have Gambit shoot this summer in both London and Texas.
