Horror Doug Liman to direct Stephen King’s The Stand

I actually think Titus Welliver would be great. The thing is he already played a very similar character in LOST.

There were so many characters that were so close to The Stand characters it is insane.

I got no personal problem casting them again for similar roles. Welliver would be great. Monaghan would be great as the man with only one song once again.

I wonder if the person they cast as Flagg will have to be the same person as the one casted for the Dark Tower series?

Stephen King: 10 Things I Know About the Remake of The Stand

1. No one will be able to top Gary Sinese, who played Stu Redman in the original ABC miniseries. He was perfect. When he says “You don’t know nothing” to the soldiers who are putting him under mandatory quarantine, you believe his contempt completely. My runner-up pick would be Jake Gyllenhaal.
2. I didn’t know anything about the remake until I read about it on the Internet.
3. You absolutely can’t make it as a two-hour movie. If it was a trilogy of films…maybe.
4. Molly Ringwald won’t be playing Fran Goldsmith this time.
5. Rutger Hauer is a little too old to play the Walkin’ Dude, and that’s too bad.
6. People who’ve seen Kubrick’s The Shining dislike the miniseries I wrote (and my amigo Mick Garris directed) even if they haven’t seen it. That’s always annoyed me. But the wheel of karma turns! This time people will probably say, “The miniseries was lots better.” BUT…
7. …historically speaking, movie studios blow the budget on things like this, so maybe it’ll be fun to look at. The dough certainly isn’t going to me, although if it is a trilogy, and if it makes a lot of money, I might be able to buy a chicken dinner at Popeye’s. Great slaw!
8. Molly Ringwald will probably not play the Trashcan Man, either, but Billy Bob Thornton would be cool. Billy Bob’s always cool.
9. They need to write in a lot of heavy-metal for the soundtrack.
10. M-O-O-N, that spells “you probably won’t see this anytime soon.” And when you do, Woody Allen won’t be directing it. Or Molly Ringwald

It's funny that King brings up Gyllenhaal for Stu. I've been thinking the same thing for awhile now, even before the movie announcement.

Oh, and BTW, this sure as **** better be a period piece.

Anyone have choices for Randall Flagg?

How about Barry Pepper?

Like period as in the 80's? I have only seen the Mini Series. Been meaning for like a million years to read the book. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

The novel takes place in 1990.

The uncut version did. The original cut took place in 1980. So....I think the time frame really does not make a difference, and would rather it take place now, it would be cheaper, and to me the "time period" really never was that important since they changed it from 80 to 85 to 90 in the past from the hardcover to paperback to the uncut.

The time period I don't see as that important, many other things I would rather worry about.

Despite the quality of the miniseries, and putting aside everything that we as fans might disagree on (casting/writer/director/material that may or may not be cut/time period), we must all agree that this song should be included at some point in the film(s), and if it's in a scene reminiscient to this one, even better...

Need. News. Now! :cmad:

Olyphant would make a pretty awesome Stu actually.

I wouldn't mind it.

Yeah, he would.

So what's the deal here? We get this influx of Dark Tower and Stand news for several weeks and then poof, nothing. Anyone know what the hold up is with these projects?

I really really really want to see Tom Cruise for Flagg. It's very inspired.

For some reason I always imagined Flagg as (well for the past decade or so) as Guy Pearce.

An A-lister would just be a bad idea IMO.

An A-lister would just be a bad idea IMO.

I think you want Flagg to have a presence though, and there's no doubt Tom Cruise has a presence.

You could cast outside A-list territory for everyone else, but I think this is the exception.

Here's some random casting ideas -

Timothy Olyphant as Stu Redman
Rooney Mara as Frannie Goldsmith
Colin Farrell as Larry Underwood
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Nick Andros
Ethan Suplee as Tom Cullen
CCH Pounder as Mother Abigail
Emily Blunt as Nadine Cross
Walton Goggins as Lloyd Henreid
Jeffrey Combs or Sharlto Copley as Trashcan Man
Michael Shannon as Randall Flagg

I don't hate the idea of Tom Cruise as Flagg, actually. He could pull off crazy/demented/evil very well.

Love the idea of Sharlto as Trashcan Man. That would be awesome.
