Horror Doug Liman to direct Stephen King’s The Stand

That's different though, because Jackson expressed his profound obsession and love for LotR, so he was essentially a true fanboy who happened to be a director too. And he delved into special effects, fantasy, and sci-fi elements beforehand.

Affleck has two Boston crime dramas under his belt, and probably hasn't read The Stand in a while. He's far from an obsessed fanboy like Jackson was. This is really apples and oranges.

I think your overstating his Lord of the Rings "obsession." I know he was a fan, but I've never gotten the impression that he was a Tolkein freak. His number one obsession was always King Kong. Someone still had to take a chance on Jackson. Everyone has to work their way up to being an epic filmmaker.

And further more, I don't see why being an uber fan is a requirement anyway. That's just geek talk.

Christopher Nolan is a perfect example. Not a Batman nerd, never made a giant movie. Knocked it out of the park.

I say give Affleck a chance. The dude has chops. He's a young director, but as an actor he's worked on plenty of huge projects. He's not an amateur.

The Stand Lands Screenwriter David Kajganich

A new report from Vulture says that the Warner Bros. adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand has landed screenwriter David Kajganich.

Kajganich (The Invasion, Blood Creek) also worked on an as-of-yet unproduced adaptation of King's It, which is likely what brought him to director Ben Affleck's attention.

Previously adapted as a television miniseries in 1994, "The Stand" tells the story of a full-scale apocalypse, driven by the accidental release of a biological weapon and the ensuing struggle of good versus evil carried out by the world's final survivors.

I say scrap this. Do a 10-12 part miniseries on HBO. :o:up:

Is Affleck still doing this?

I'll believe it when I see it.

Thank you, Mr./Mrs. Expert. :o

Problem for The Stand?

Ben Affleck & 'The Stand': Director Having 'Hard Time' With Stephen King Adaptation.

"Right now we're having a very hard time," he said. "But I like the idea -- it's like 'The Lord of the Rings' in America. And it's about how we would reinvent ourselves as a society. If we started all over again, what would we do?"

I dunno, if you figure on 12 episode seasons. 60 hours seems about right.

The story doesn't require that much time. Dark Tower, maybe, but not The Stand. I could see the Stand being a three season event, tops.

Yeah, how would you split it into 5 seasons?

Captain Trips taking hold would have to be an entire season, then people coming together to try and get to Boulder or Vegas with Flagg as season 2. Then life in the free zone, which would be a dull as hell season 3, ending with Mother Abigail's return and an explosive finale. Then season 4 establishing the 4 to go lead the stand against Flagg and evil and part of their trip to there... and season 5 wraps it all up.

Just seems like it'd get a little thin on the ground. Maybe if they made five 6-episode seasons like season 1 of The Walking Dead it might work...

Who knows? I don't even know if Affleck's still on board...

Just hand it over to HBO, Warners. It'll be better off. :o

I'd still rather see a big screen trilogy. This could be so cinematic.

I just made the mistake of taking a look at a casting thread on the IMDB boards...

"Hey, you know who would be great for Harold Lauder? EMINEM!!!"

Sorry no news

But I just read this...or at least the comic book version of this. I actually liked it a lot I was constantly interested. I think that, and maybe it's because I read the comic and not the actual book, that it was as epic as I kept hearing, but I still liked it. However, I really dont know how theyd turn this in a successful movie or even a successful series of movies.
Unless they make some big changes I dont feel like audiences would really like a multi-part film.

But if they had to make a film...
Stu Redman - Chris Evans
Frannie Goldsmith - Rooney Mara
Randall Flagg - Michael Fassbender
Mother Abigail - Whoopi Goldberg
Harold Lauder - ???
Glen Bateman - Beau Bridges
Larry Underwood - Oscar Isaac
Nadine Cross - Kate Beckinsale
Nick Andross - Ezra Miller
Lloyd Henreid - Charlie Hunnam
Ralph Bretner - William H Macy
Trashcan Man - Sharlto Copely

I must be the only Stephen King fan alive who wasn't overly impressed with this book. Perhaps because I read the un-abridged version, but I just thought it was indicative of most of King's worst qualities.

I read the unabridged version and I liked it. But it's a very long book to read and it could have used better editing to remove excess. I wouldn't mind the movie adaptation cutting out several portions of unnecessary story.

I thought the ending was anti-climatic, still i wouldnt mind seeing a new mini series

I liked the mini series. They should do another.

Goddammit, Warner Bros. How many times do I have to tell you? HBO miniseries! :argh:

I'd be down for this to be adapted into a movie if they changed the ending. A 3 part epic movie (although that'd probably be too expensive to be rated R)
1. The Virus/The Journey
2. Living in the Town
3. The final battle
