Horror Doug Liman to direct Stephen King’s The Stand

There's like 20 some odd characters in the book and the director wants to add another one?

Maybe he meant that Boone has him in mind while writing the script and he'll cast him...

Word at the tracking board sites is that Boone and King want these two actors for the lead roles (I'm guessing Stu and Flagg?). Let's see how easy it is to guess who they are. :p

- Oscar winners
- worked (separately) with a very popular director at this board
- worked (together) in an action movie that flopped

Boone will turn over the script this June apparently so I'm guessing that no offer will be made until the script is done so that's why none of the trades are reporting it yet.

McConaughey and Bale!!!

I'm a real Sherlock, I is.

It'd be a weird Reign of Fire Reunion. I love Reign of Fire.

Well, this director certainly is starting this project off in the most "gonna probably f*** this up" way possible.

McConaughey would actually be a brilliant choice for either Stu or Flagg. Never pictured Bale as Randall Flagg but I definitely wouldn't be opposed to it and I think he would do a great job. Actually, thinking about it Christian Bale would be an excellent choice for Larry Underwood.

I think Bale's much too old at this point to play Larry.

He could be combining characters as well. I'm completely against turning this into a movie (always been pro-HBO miniseries) but I guess if they are going to condense the entire book into 3 hours combining characters wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Oh yeah, I forgot he was only in his early 20s in the book. I guess they are wanting him for Flagg then. I'm down with that.

Christian Bale = Abigail Freemantle

:o

Already reserved for Morgan Freeman

or maybe Cuba Gooding Jr if we're on a budget

But seriously tackling The Stand as a movie is a bad idea. Somebody needs to stop this.

And I feel like attempting a multi-film deal like The Hobbit has going on with something like this would just be a fool's errand.

So I’m a big Stephen King fan, and I know you’re a gigantic Stephen King fan, so I have to ask about The Stand. You’re directing it. What can you tell me about it?

We’re gonna do one three-hour, R-rated version with an amazing A-list cast across the board. Every single one of those characters will be somebody you recognize and somebody you relate to. And it’s gonna be awesome. I’m really excited. It’s the most exciting thing I’ve ever got to do in my entire life. If 12-year-old me had ever known that one day I’d be doing this, to even just go back and look at that kid, I’d be like, Keep doing what you’re doing! It’s just crazy. I’ve met so many actors over the years, and like, when I met Stephen King, I hugged him with tears in my eyes. He meant that much to me when I was young. I still say everything I learned about writing I learned from Stephen King. I don’t read screenplays. I don’t read screenplay how-to books. It’s always just, establish the character. Establish the character.

Sounds highly unlikely. If WB, Warner Brothers Pictures is going to actually fund an R Rated three hour movie with the budget that this dictates I will be stunned. Utterly stunned.

I was going to say the thing I've been saying multiple times per page for the last several pages.... but I won't.

But you know what it is.
