The Marvel Universe has a lot of rich storylines to draw from. However, I have noticed a lot of stories are recent stories (after you count the obligatory origin).

Iron Man 3 - Extremis - 2005-2006
Guardians of the Galaxy uses the 2008 team
Captain America 3 is apparently Civil War

On the other hand, Spider-Man seems to try and draw from older, classic stories more than not (Green Goblin, even Venom by this point).

Am I just having selective memory? I know nothing about Thor, so I can't comment on that. Does Iron Man 2 draw from any stories?

So what would you draw from for movie stories? Would you go old school or stick with modern?

Iron Man does't have too many great stories. Spider-Man draws from older villains because they are iconic villains. They don't really even use actual storylines that I've seen.

It all depends on the character. Ant-Man is doing the to catch an ant storyline which is pretty old. Thor 2 used the Malekith story which is old (I think).

Thor 2 didn't really follow a story from the comics at all. There was no Aether in the comics, and the backstory with Malekith, Kurse, the "dark world," etc were all invented or heavily modified for the movie. Thor 1 similarly took a lot of liberties with characters and concepts from the comics being combined in new ways (for example, the Casket of Ancient Winters was Malekith's schtick in his original appearance), so I'd say that for the Thor franchise, they haven't taken advantage of his classic storylines, just his characters.

I think that Thor 3 would really benefit from being more of an adaptation, though.
