Dreamworks Animation wins film rights to 'Captain Underpants'

I like the style. Looks like the eyes were painted on.

Reminds me of the recent Peanuts movie.

Oh dear, I don't believe that's appropriate for children.

The underpants are way too high. It's obscene. I myself have worn underpants for many years and not once have I worn my underwear that high and I like to think all right thinking people agree with me

Man I used to be a huge fan of these books when I was a kid.

Feels like this movie is coming out 15 years too late though.

Trailer.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaasss

God this looks bad. And I don't remember the books fondly either.

I said it in this thread before but I think they should have South Parked Middleditch's voice to make it sound more high pitched. An adult male's voice sounds weird coming out of that kid. Kevin Hart's voice is fine, he's high pitched enough. :o

That aside, it looks funny enough. Certainly better than Boss Baby.

Beyond the obvious literal toilet humor, Dav Pulleys books have some truly good satirical gags. I hope some of that can come through in this movie. Also I heard a while back that the film container s some other animation styles to emulate the way the books contain hand drawn passages and the like.

I loved this books as a kid ans they were a big reason that I learned to love both reading and drawing. I hope this movie can match the books and that kids today can enjoy it.

Today I learned that the series wrapped up after 12 books. I knew of 8 or so, I stopped dreading after 6 or seven. In the last book George and Harold meet their future selves. Harold is married to a man.

This looks like the utmost superficial elements from Pilkey. It just looks like a movie used to cash in on the superhero craze but as a simple parody of it. Now the books are in areas, but they're intelligent. This doesn't look like it at all. Again, it's more superficial without the understanding of the sense of humor in the books.

I don't like the voices either. You'd think kids would voice... kids?

I mean...it's not uncommon for adults to voice kids.

As someone who never read the books this looks kinda funny

But they make no effort to sound like kids. It sounds like Kevin Hart came into the recording studio with some coffee, recorded his lines and left onto the next thing he had to do that day. Yes, I'm sure actors do this, but it doesn't sound like much effort was put in. It looks more like, "We got Kevin Hart and that's enough! Bye Kevin!"

This trailer looks like a generic animated film ripped the face off that was these books and is now wearing it for a face, parading around to give the appearance that it's a Captain Underpants movie.

Who else was in the bidding for the film rights? Bluesky or Illumination probably would have been better choices.

It's not uncommon for adult women to voice kids (The Simpsons, Powerpuff Girls, Rugrats, etc.). It's not like it's a deal-breaker but seeing an animated kid speaking with a grown man's voice is a little odd.

Yeah, the animation looks great. Love that style.

The animation is by far the best thing about this. 2D animation would have been preferred, but since those days are gone, this is the next best thing.

I'm not familiar with the property. Is this character popular?

It was a relatively popular children's book series in the late '90s-'00s. Nowhere near the level of Harry Potter, though.

Clip.

If you were growing up between the late 90s and early 00s, there was a high likely chance you’ve come across Captain Underpants. It was the biggest phenomenon long before Diary of a Wimpy Kid ever existed. That was the go-to book for every elementary schooler who wanted to read something absurd. Twenty years after the release of The First Epic Novel and 11 more that proceeded afterward, it was inevitable to adapt the books into a feature-length animated film. Ever since its announcement, I was thoroughly pumped to watch this. Between this and Wonder Woman I was more eager to see this.

Here's my review of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

Probably gonna hit this after seeing WW.
